This unusual bed in turbidites of the Upper Cretaceous Shumagin Formation (Alaska on Nagai Is) was affected by soft sediment deformation - ball and pillow structure. Liquifaction caused by shock?

Graywacke beach pebbles. Few beaches are so uniform. This is from Nagai Island in the Aleutians (Alaska). These are from the Upper Cretaceous Shumagin Formation.

A M7.3 earthquake struck offshore Alaska yesterday. This is the sixth earthquake above M7 in this small stretch of the subduction zone since 2020.

This was a weird strike-slip earthquake, reminiscent of a similar quake in 2020. Did these ruptures happen in the slab, the upper plate - or both?

I've found that the Zoom auto transcription really struggles with Alaska place names. Shumagin Gap (part of the AK subduction zone) became Shoe Megan Gap. Yakutat block (a microplate colliding with southern AK) became Yak Attack block. I liked the imagery of that one.

We have a new paper on background seismicity and aftershocks associated with several recent large earthquakes along the Alaska Peninsula. The two events in the Shumagin segment triggered many more aftershocks in the upper plate than the larger Chignik earthquake. 🧪⚒️ bit.ly/4nJQHT8

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, fishermen in the Shumagin Islands and South Unimak areas harvested about 720,000 salmon through the end of June — the second-lowest June on record since the 1980s.

(From KUCB - Unalaska)
The June salmon harvest in the southern Alaska Peninsula was the worst in 4 decades
Meanwhile, Fish and Game is putting more restrictions on the fishery.

Today's M7.2 Alaska earthquake (sequence in blue) occurred within the aftershock zone (pinkish-purple) of the 2020 M7.8 Simeonof event, so could be considered a late aftershock. 🧪
Also note that the very shallow part of the Shumagin "gap" has not had any recent earthquakes.

A M7.2 earthquake occurred offshore Alaska last night - the latest in a series of large quakes that started in 2020. Although the megathrust has produced great earthquakes both east and west of here, this part is known as a "seismic gap".

The M 5.6 #earthquake south of Alaska occurred at the Shumagin gap, which according to research has not ruptured in over 3000 years. Two adjacent small pockets ruptured in 1938 and 1946. This region is a candidate for one of the next mega-thrust #earthquakes.
