Nature photographer Varun Aditya captured these dancing lemurs on Madagascar, to which someone has added appropriate music.

Let's talk about sifakas (genus Propithecus) and why they dance whenever they leave the trees.

We have to start by understanding Intermembral Index (IMI).

Sifakas evolved to leap between trees, so when they have to cross the ground they move in sideways hops: #AGoodPlace

Golden-crowned sifakas are one of 9 unique species of sifaka. Like all sifakas, they are vertical clingers and leapers, and can jump impressive distances. Quite stunning!

Did you know that sifakas hug trees to stay cool? We featured this phenomenon in our 2021 World Lemur Festival logo, illustrated by Mr. Lemur.

Caught mid-air! These two photos show Coquerel’s sifakas doing what they do best—leaping. Unlike other lemurs, they move through the trees by sitting upright and springing from branch to branch using the powerful strength of their back legs. Talk about leg day.

Golden-crowned sifakas (Propithecus tattersalli) are restricted to forest fragments in northeastern Madagascar. Their population is suspected to have endured a decline of at least 80% in three generations. Threatened by severe forest loss. Endangered. Photo: © Kyle West/iNaturalist/CC 4.0.

Beautiful Crowned sifakas are 1 of 9 species of sifaka. They are found in western Madagascar, and some live near another sifaka species — the Decken's sifaka!

Can you spot the baby Verreux's Sifaka clinging to its mother? These cuties will stay close to their moms until they begin eating solid foods and venturing beyond the safefy of their mothers.
