A giant red wolf named Jól crouches in a ready position. With a toothy grin, he addresses one of his students out of frame, Briar, with a wager: “Next batch of lemon tarts will be on the house…ONLY if you can knock me flat on my tail.” Lore Bit: Briar is notorious for restraining themselves when sparring with good ol’ Jól. Whether it’s from fear or lack of motivation; it depends on how the wind blows that day. But, it is known throughout Silvergrove that Briar has a ravenous sweet tooth. On rare occasions, Jól will wager a pastry that briar loves as motivation. Whether Biar is successful or not, there’s at least a sweet reward for them at the end of the session.

Jól is one of the elders of Silvergrove; a peaceful and quiet forest town populated with more werefolk and other supernatural beings. Jól runs a cafe that is often visited; with its worm atmosphere and his infectious smile. He makes his cafe a space where visitors can share their stories over a nice beverage and fresh pastries. Along side his cafe, Jól also serves as a mentor for younger shapeshifters. He uses his many years of experience to guide his students to be more comfortable with who they are; no matter what forms they may take.

Eventually, we reach a sprawling guest house – a surprisingly-elegant structure of polished stone and stained glass that practically glows in the warm light. The acolytes open the doors for us and bow low as we step inside. "This is where the Archon rests," one of them says. "He has been negotiating aid to reclaim Silvergrove, but with the blessing of the goddess, his efforts will surely succeed.” The interior is modestly decorated but spacious - large enough to accommodate several families. The hum of conversation and the clatter of dishes spill from the opened dining hall just off to the right, drawing my attention. As I step further in and look through the opened doors, my gaze sweeps over the gathering, past familiar faces marked with weariness and resilience, until it lands on him. At the head of the long, well-worn table, surrounded by what remains of our people, sits my father. Archon Aldric Allsilver. His gaze snaps to me, as though he's sensed my stare. His expression is unreadable, a mask of practiced composure, until his eyes drift to the acolytes flanking Drax, Ryn, and me. They bow deeply to us, uttering about their unwavering service and readiness to assist whenever we should require them. With a final, lingering gaze, they retreat, the heavy front double doors to the building groaning shut behind them with an echoing THUD that reverberates through the space.

If Torin and the rest of Silvergrove want to hoard power, clutching their precious relic as they cast me out in my one and only moment of glory, then fine. I'll show them what happens when they push me too many times. I'll rip the Breath of Life right out of their grasp. And I'll make sure they feel its absence before I return to Primora to save this world. "How, uh, very...suspicious of you," the golden-haired one Selariel, I think - says awkwardly. "I mean 'kind." She forces a smile that looks like it's on the verge of a diplomatic malfunction. V rounds on me, glaring like I just insulted her entire bloodline. Adorable. "What's your angle?" I bark a laugh, throwing my hands up in mock surrender. "No angle." I meet her eyes and smirk. "I just want to do something that will ruin my brothers' day." Ori's eyebrows shoot up. "Nothing wrong about that..." "Yeah," that girl Mel, who Ryn befriended, mutters. "Totally normal sibling behavior." I flash Mel a wan smile. "Glad you get me." V, of course, does not look remotely convinced, but that's fine. She'll get over it. They need me. They know it. I know it. And, more importantly, Torin doesn't. Which is why this is going to work.

Welcome to the utopian planet of Elysia (distinctly NOT Silvergrove on the world of Primora, as Ash assumes here in this excerpt) — where practically everything is breathtakingly stunning! 🌸🌳🌘✨🌌
I shiver with pleasure, absorbing the aroma of sweet, damp soil and aged bark, the sour tang of leaves and acrid bite of insects in their bitter shells. I suck air into my lungs, deep and desperate, like a diver breaking the surface after too long submerged, relishing how fresh it is. Everything around me, from the tangled trees, to the glowing insects, to the nightly symphony of animals, pulses with life. It’s verdant, humid, and wild, without a trace of blight or decay. This must be Silvergrove. It has to be. Nowhere else on Primora is thriving like this. The landscape is vibrant and alive with color, even under the gentle glow of the moonlight. The trees are nothing short of breathtaking, adorned with blossoms in shades of pink, white, gold, and lavender. It feels like stepping into an eternal spring, where the seasons have paused to revel in their finest moment. Ahead, a field of turquoise flowers ripples softly, encircled by trees whose buttery-yellow canopies glisten, as though kissed by sunlight that has lingered past its time. Closer to me, I’m surrounded by towering trees drenched in vibrant pinks and the occasional pure white willow, their vine-like branches cascading like a waterfall, bowing gracefully and swaying in greeting.

Not only does he occupy our father’s space, but he’s also wearing his crown, though the weight of it already looks as if it’s crushing him. His elbow is braced heavily on his knee, his face buried in his hand, as if holding himself together takes all the strength he has left. He doesn’t acknowledge me until I’m directly before him, and when he finally looks up, I barely recognize him. The fair, open features I knew so well from the one brother who didn't treat me quite as harshly as all the rest are now gaunt, his eyes hollowed and rimmed with dark circles that speak of countless sleepless nights. The mouth that once smiled more than any of ours is now set in a harsh, unforgiving line, as though it’s been years since he last knew joy. When recognition flares in his gaze, his blue eyes harden, turning as cold as glaciers. His expression tightens into a scowl, and he leans forward, the movement charged with tension and what is obviously poorly-restrained ire. “Ashendra,” he growls, low and menacing, my name curling off his tongue like a threat. Somehow, the quiet venom in his voice is far more terrifying than all the times our father roared my name for the world to hear. “Torin? Wh-What are you doing on the throne?” I barely manage to demand. I feel my stomach sink as I begin to process why this must have come to pass. “Where’s Father?” I ask anyway. Torin rises from the throne slowly, as if the weight of all Primora is balanced on his back. The tension in the air feels like a coiled spring, ready to snap. When he descends the dais, his gaze never leaves mine, sending a shiver down my neck. When he stops in front of me, he’s close enough that I can see his clenched jaw tick, a silent battle raging behind his icy eyes. “I had hoped I’d never have to see you here again,” he says, his voice carefully controlled, yet there’s no mistaking the anger simmering just beneath. “But here you are. Back in Silvergrove. Back where you don’t belong.” My brows pinch together as I consciously work on not cowering beneath that gaze. I keep my expression neutral, refusing to let him see the sting of his words. “I came to report to Father,” I reply, my voice sharper than intended. “He asked that I retrieve more magick for him. I don’t understand—” “Father’s dead,” Torin cuts me off accusingly, his voice hoarse. I gasp audibly, falling back a step. I never truly liked the man, but he was my father. Some part of me did love him. The tears crowd my eyes before I even have a moment to process it all. “Dead…” I repeat in a whisper. “The Dominion Prime came here — into our own home — and slaughtered him. Ripped him apart with what magick still resides in the broken REV he also stole from us. Claimed the device had malfunctioned. Caused an explosion that cost him one of his arms. And for that, he decided to take his revenge on Father.” “I… I didn’t know…” I begin, my eyes wide and shifting as I think back on the device Ori crafted around the Aetherium Sphere V and I had retrieved from that blasted cave. “Didn’t know?” Torin spits. “That’s your excuse? You didn’t know?” His voice rises slightly, the edge of his composure fraying. “Father is dead, Ashendra, and we're powerless to seek justice because he was murdered by the Dominion Prime — the leader of our world. He butchered Father in his own palace, in front of his own people. And you? You were the one who handed him the excuse to do it.” My jaw tightens as anger ignites in my chest. “Don’t you dare put that on me,” I snap. “I was following orders. Father’s orders. He wanted the REV. He wanted the soulcrafts. I did what I was told.” Torin’s laugh is sharp and bitter, ricocheting off the walls of the expansive throne room, as if the echoes themselves are mocking me. “And now look where that blind obedience has gotten us. Silvergrove is a target. Every one of our alliances are crumbling. The Dominion Prime distrusts us, and it’s all because of that cursed device you brought here.” My pulse races, and for a second, I’m twelve again, standing in front of Father after he just issued one of his harsh punishments for some minor infringement, something inconsequential that my brothers could get away with any day of the week but that is blown out of proportion when it’s me. But then the anger and indignation spills over. I step closer, challengingly. My fists are clenched at my sides. “You think I wanted this? You think I knew the REV could explode with the power it contains? I was trying to protect us. Protect our people. Protect my family. But no matter what I do, it’s never enough, is it?” Torin’s eyes flash, and for a moment, I see the brother I once knew — the one who shielded me from Father’s wrath more than once, the one who whispered that it would all be okay. But the moment passes, and his expression hardens again. “You’re right, Ash. I see why Father treated you the way he did now. It’s not enough. And it never will be.” I stagger back as if physically punched in the gut by the one living family member I was actually somewhat close to. My heart pounds, sharp and aching like it’s been pierced. The tears resurface despite the storm raging inside me. I can’t even speak.
