On this day in 1924, Gilbert Simondon was born. A pioneering French philosopher of technology, Simondon challenged us to see machines not as passive tools but as entities with their own modes of existence.

Given that a demos is, contrary to classical theory, constituted via transindividual phenomena (á la Simondon);

Given that AI, psychological plurality, and intersectionality together challenge the notion of individual identity;

How should our idea of democracy evolve?

Simondon, Baudrillard, Lefebvre, the time has actually come for a lot of french theory to be pretty useful for understanding the world in a straightforward way.

many will hate to hear this
I often think about Simondon’s point that the notion of ‘jobs’ in the sense of social roles distorts our understanding of ‘work’ in the sense of what is actually done in industry. I think it’s probably going to be useful for thinking about the social effects of the coming wave of AI deployment.

Gilbert Simondon makes no small display of intellectual power with a profoundly original theory of individuation implying a whole philosophy. Simondon begins from two critical remarks: 1) Traditionally, the principle of individuation is modeled on a completed individual, one who is already formed.

There is a great new special issue of the Journal of Continental Philosophy on technology, with various translations of 20th-century philosophers of technology, such as Gilbert Simondon, Bernard Stiegler, and Günther Anders. #philtech

Speaking of Simondon, check out the latest entry in our special issue in AI & Society by @susanaaires.bsky.social, which explores the relevance of Simondon for understanding the functioning and politics of DNNs
Happy to share that my paper "On the individuation of complex computational models: Gilbert Simondon and the technicity of AI" is now available on AI & Society. Thanks to @ludovico-rella.bsky.social and @fabio-iapaolo.bsky.social for putting together this special issue!

for the love of god, AI systems aren't "just tools that are neither good nor evil in and of themselves". AI systems *are* tools of capitalism. they exist as tools of capitalism. there is no AI system "in and of itself" outside of capitalism
