The Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) is a binary data format maintained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The latest version is BUFR Edition 4. BUFR Edition 3 is also considered current for operational use. BUFR was created in 1988 with the goal of replacing the WMO's dozens of character-based, position-driven meteorological codes, such as SYNOP (surface observations), TEMP (upper air soundings) and CLIMAT (monthly climatological data). BUFR was designed to be portable, compact, and universal. Any kind of data can be represented, along with its specific spatial/temporal context and any other associated metadata. In the WMO terminology, BUFR belongs to the category of table-driven code forms, where the meaning of data elements is determined by referring to a set of tables that are kept and maintained separately from the message itself.

Has anyone tried just using generative AI to just create the radiosonde data? “ChatGPT, give me the sounding data for DEN for April 1st, 2025 in BUFR format” sounds like something that should work REALLY well, and save lots of money.

With fewer weather balloons due to government staffing cuts, forecasts may be less accurate

My end of week accomplishment and excuse to celebrate with some beer: successfully decoding the first Sequence Descriptor of a WMO Upper Air BUFR message!!
I’m not to full-fledged decoding just yet, as there’s more to do with un-scaling integer values, BUT ITS WORKING!!

From the social media hive, anyone have resources/tools/experience writing BUFR from CSV/ASCII/fixed-width text files? I have a sounding I need to convert to BUFR and don't want to reinvent the wheel (nor can I currently create any kind of wheel)

It’s not every day you get to help the WMO make a (very minor) correction to the BUFR Tables and have them accept it. 🎉
Was it super consequential? No, but now all of the Table D entries will have the same number of columns.

NCEI just straight up doesn’t have OUN BUFR radiosonde data from 2017-2021. Nowhere to be found, at least under the known WBAN ID. So… that’s cool.

Eh, I doubt management is in a place to understand why compressed BUFR archives in object storage is a stupid idea. Sometimes you need engineers to step up and be persuasive human beings.
