Reading this spurred me to write a thread that got out of hand and became a post — not to downplay the imposition of Han norms, but just say this is an incomplete understanding of what "Sinicization" means in Xi's China.
Beyond cultural and ethnic identity, it is about enforcing political identity.

Definitely an under-discussed component to « Chinamaxxing » within the context of PRC’s active Sinicization efforts! Han is the majority ethnicity in the PRC, but Han culture/languages greatly differ by regions.

I used to be on some forums where people used "Han" as a shorthand for "Chinese", and it was very funny when they applied it to people and concepts that were not Han at all, like Lee Kuan Yew

one of the interesting things I find in East Asian prehistory is the remarkable similarity of described elements of the Nanyue (pre-Sinicization South Chinese) and the culture of Japan. the use of tooth blackening in particular reads as Japanese, esp since almost no one else did it

I can say that when HK churches talk about Sinicization of Christianity, they don't talk about it in strictly political terms, but I've always taken it as a political issue. The govt certainly sees it as such. And HK churches wouldn't be discussing it if the govt wasn't pressuring them to do so.
