More great #BBCRadio4 output. Desert Island Disks always good but this is exceptional. #Parkrun complex origins from brutally honest but touching life-story of Paul #Sinton-Hewitt www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

A very evocative episode of #DesertIslandDiscs, reflecting on a certain kind of South African masculinity & reckoning with the wrongs of Apartheid. An unassuming man who has changed the world through #ParkRun.

The Baker-Sinton-Hewitt connection runs back to Greenbelt 2024, when Paul was in conversation at the festival with Harry’s mum, Jenny Baker, about running, community and building hope. He was also the guest starter for our own ‘greenbeltrun’ that year.

The founder of Park Run.
Should be interesting.
I love the Sunday vibe on R4.
From laughing or groaning thru Sunday Worship, B.H, with Paddy O'Connell - our new neighbour! The Archers etc. Prepping veg, the roasty aromas, & G&T or sherry!

Not surprised by some of the musical choices (never known a South African who hasn’t been a fan of Sugar Man!) but hearing about his early life was really fascinating

Scribbled few bits on glorious #ParkRun I hope it survives pointless slings & arrows. Wiki stuff Too!

#GCs were forced to admit in #Scotland under oath. There are NO concrete examples of the threats & harms about which they mindlessly chunter with temporary inexplicable fascist UK state approval.
• #Parkrun founder: Mr "Sinton-Hewitt was suffering from depression and unable to run due to an injury. He founded Parkrun because he wanted to continue to spend time with his running friends." • Running, jogging, walking & spectating with "friends" defines Parkrun. • Parkrun is an egalitarian event open to all including pets on a leash and assistance dogs. • The aim is the individual self improves. • Bunch of folk gathering together in completely free self association to improve themselves with some company & human joy thrown in. • Yay Parkrun all power to your beautiful concept & determination to be faithful to 'principle' of founders. • Where 'transgender' is functionality irrelevant to a group of people having a fun, possibly self improving run with some company and no need to declare any #LGBTiQ+ connection if it doesn’t suit the individual. • Folk being together, in mutual; non judgemental, social camaraderie. • "Parkrun is a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. • Parkrun is 5k and takes place every Saturday morning. • Junior Parkrun is 2k, dedicated to 4 -14 year olds and their families, every Sunday morning. • Parkrun is positive, welcoming and inclusive, there is no time limit and no one finishes last. • Everyone is welcome to come along. • Parkrun represents the best of us as ordinary humans. I can understand why the usual hawfwits see it as such an ideological challenge to the hate they work to routinely engender. • The Journal of Public Health reported in a 2013 study of 7,308 Parkrun participants that the events attracted people who described themselves as non-runners, with women, older adults and overweight people being well represented. It added that participation problems have been minimised, with no upper age limit, no special equipment and no cost. • While some participants ran before entering their first event, some are new to exercise; • Parkrun offered the opportunity and support to become active on a continuous weekly basis. • A 2015 qualitative study by the University of Loughborough found that runners attending a Parkrun for the first time were typically motivated for weight loss or an improvement in their physical fitness. • On the other hand, there were a range of motivations for runners to continue regularly taking part, with runners wanting to beat their personal record time, reach a certain number of runs and join a milestone club, enjoy being outdoors, make new friends through volunteering, and meeting up with existing friends or family. • Transgender Allowance • • In the mid-2020s, Parkrun came under fire several times for allowing transgender women to register as women, - despite the event being a fun-run and not a sporting competition - ; particularly after a report was published by right-wing think tank The Policy Exchange calling for Parkrun to be stripped of public funding unless it banned trans women from registering as women. • This call was met with considerable support in the press, and was echoed by long time [Anti Trans Inclusion] advocates: • • Sharron Davies – who called the organisation "cowardly" for not forcing transgender participants into their own separate category – and • • Martina Navratilova, - who described the allowance of transgender women to participate as "alienating" women and "taking away dreams." *** my emphasis *** 471. The Committee notes that there were some concerns expressed on the potential impacts of the Bill on women and girls and on single-sex spaces. The Committee notes that there were also some concerns expressed by some minority ethnic groups and some religious groups about the potential impacts of the Bill on grounds of religious belief. Further, the Committee recognises how service providers currently provide trans inclusive single-sex spaces making exceptions as allowed for by the Equality Act 2010. 472. The majority of the Committee believes that the concerns raised, while recognising that such views are sincerely held, go beyond the scope of the provisions in the Bill, and is satisfied that the Bill itself will not change any of the protections or definitions set out in the Equality Act 2010, including the ability to exclude trans people from single-sex services where proportionate and appropriate. The majority is satisfied that the Bill will not change or remove women's rights, make changes to how toilets and changing rooms operate, redefine what a man or a woman is, nor change or expand trans people's rights. The majority is satisfied that the Bill will not change the effect of a GRC, which is that the individual is legally recognised in their acquired gender. *** Further, the majority recognise that, when asked about evidence of abuse and concerns, no witness was able to provide concrete examples.*** 473. A minority of the Committee is not persuaded that the risks have been examined sufficiently and disagrees with the decision to frame these issues as separate from the Bill. They take the view that how acquiring a GRC affects a person's definition and rights under the Equality Act 2010 and believe that this is a central issue in determining what impact the Bill might have on women and girls and seeks clarification on that from the Scottish Government.

As the sunsets on this Bank Holiday (not all of the UK) I am very much looking forward to reading this. Had the pleasure of meeting @pauls-h.bsky.social today. A 5km freedom run/walk round our local parkrun (the wrong way round!) and then to listen to Paul talk and kindly sign my copy. Lovely stuff.
