Summer Evening on the Beach at Skagen: The Painter and his Wife by
Peder Severin Krøyer, 1899, The Hirschsprung Collection (København, Denmark)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #DanishImpressionism #SkagenPainters
One of the best-known paintings of the Skagen Painters, it depicts Krøyer with his wife Marie and his dog Rap strolling on the beach in the moonlight. The Skagen Painters were a close-knit group of mainly Danish artists who gathered each summer from the late 1870s in the fishing village of Skagen in the far north of Jutland, painting the local fishermen and their own gatherings. Krøyer arrived there in 1882, quickly becoming the most prominent member of the group. In 1895, in a letter to his friend Oscar Björck, Krøyer wrote "I am also thinking of painting a large portrait of my wife and me together — but for that I shall definitely need good weather, so it won't be this year." In fact, it was four years later, in the summer of 1899, that he finally created his large painting. Maybe it was in recognition of 10 years of marriage with Marie Triepcke as illustrated in other works of family life at the time as well as in a number of the photographs and sketches he used as a basis for the work.

The painting shows a lightship at anchor in heavy seas, viewed from the prow. The ship's hull is red with a horizontal white band, within which faint red letters spell the legend "Skagen Rev." A single mast rises amidships, topped by a spherical lantern. The silhouettes of two double-masted schooners are in the background. The sky is full of heavy, dark clouds, though the rays of the sun are breaking through, suggesting a storm is either gathering or has just passed. The red of the ship's hull stands out in stark contrast to the overall color scheme, in which dark shades or grey and blue are prevalent.

This painting, rendered in subdued pastel colors, shows a white lighthouse rising from among a small cluster of small red buildings on the shore of a calm sea. Most of the painting is taken up by the sky, in which a large, yellow, gibbous moon shines. In the foreground is a blue-green expanse, perhaps a field, ending in a beach by an inlet, on the opposite side of which the lighthouse stands.

Fisherman Kræn Wollesen Mending the Net by Anna Ancher, 1892, Skagen Museum (Skagen, Denmark)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Realism #SkagenPainters
This painting depicts the fisherman Kræn Wollesen, a local figure from Skagen, Denmark, meticulously mending his fishing net. The scene is bathed in soft, natural light, characteristic of Ancher's style, and focuses on the everyday life and labor of the fishing community. The composition is intimate, drawing the viewer into the quiet concentration of the fisherman. The muted color palette and realistic depiction emphasize the harsh realities and humble dignity of life at sea. Ancher was a prominent figure in the Skagen Painters (Skagensmalerne) movement, a group of artists who gathered in Skagen, Denmark, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This movement was part of the broader Realist and Naturalist trends in European art, rejecting Romantic idealism in favor of depicting everyday life and the natural world with accuracy and honesty. The Skagen Painters were also influenced by Impressionism, particularly n their use of light and color. This work exemplifies the shift away from historical or mythological subjects between scenes of contemporary life.

Interior vith Clematis by Anna Ancher, 1913, Skagens Museum (Skagen, Denmark)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #SkagenPainters
In this picture, Ancher has painted her own studio in her home, Anchers Hus. It looks, however, more like a living room without any indications that this is an artist's working space: there is no easel, no paintbrushes and most importantly, no paintings. Instead, she has chosen to focus on the table and the arrangement of clematis flowers on the table, and the window framed by the light blue curtains. In 1913, the architect Ulrik Plesner designed a new wing to Anchers Hus with studios for both Anna Ancher and her husband Michael Ancher. Anna Ancher probably painted this picture shortly after the completion of the wing. The painting gets its title from the clematis in the vase on the table. The clematis is the cultivar Jackmanii, which still grows in the gardens at Anchers Hus and Skagens Museum.

Summer Evening at Skagen: The Artist's Wife and Dog by the Shore by Peder Severin Krøyer, 1892, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (Copenhagen, Denmar

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #Realism #SkagenPainters
The work shows Marie Krøyer, the artist's wife, standing on the beach at Skagen with their dog Rap at her side and the moonlight reflected in the sea. Marie is shown in profile and her melancholy face and bright dress glow under the light of the setting sun. The painting is one of the works in which Krøyer tries to capture the light and mood on the Skagen shore during what he called "l'heure bleue" (the blue hour), the short period at dusk when the light casts a blue tint over the landscape. The moon's reflection adds a slight feeling of depth to the otherwise flat background which consists mostly of the monolithic blue sea. Although Marie is depicted as being at a similar height to the viewer, the horizon rises above her head, so her radiance is emphasized by comparison with the muted, nearly monochrome background.

No patron here to please - Krøyer painted his own wife, Marie, half-dozing in a garden chair at Skagen. The empty chair beside her says more than any commission ever could.

A woman in a pale rosé-white dress reclines with eyes closed in a wooden garden chair, her head tilted forward and hands resting in her lap. Beside her stands an empty matching wooden garden chair with striped fabric seat and back, angled slightly toward the viewer. Dense dark green foliage fills the background, with small white flowers scattered among the leaves. Dappled sunlight falls across her figure, catching the folds of her dress in warm peach and cream tones, while loose brushwork suggests soft gras
