ConnectWise starts restoring Cloud Backup (SkyKick) today. Before you reconnect, check each Microsoft 365 tenant for the app secrets the attacker planted. App IDs and checks here: #infosec

What happened: ConnectWise says it found unauthorized access to app credentials for Cloud Backup (formerly SkyKick) on Oct 14. On Oct 15 the actor used them to request app-only tokens, tenant by tenant. On Oct 17 ConnectWise disabled seven app identities and shut off backups for all partners.

Competitive conflict: rivals did not wait. Universal.cloud, a reseller, began moving customers to its own uBackup on Oct 21 and says most have moved and will not be reconnected to ConnectWise. ConnectWise, owned by Thoma Bravo since 2019, bought SkyKick in Sep 2024. Churn shows up at renewal.

Microsoft attributes a compromise of ConnectWise to Chinese-linked hackers, with hundreds of targets in a global attack. The intrusion hit the SkyKick cloud backup service ConnectWise acquired, not its self-hosted tools.

China-linked hackers used an AI agent to breach ConnectWise and hit MSPs
A stolen credential inside one IT vendor's backup app let a Chinese state-aligned hacking group try to break into more than 2,250 companies in a matter of hours, many of which had no idea ConnectWise was even in their supply chain. Microsoft said on October 21 that it has tied a nation-state group it calls Storm-0940 to a breach of ConnectWise's Cloud Backup service, the tool formerly known as SkyKick that thousands of managed service providers use to back up client email, files and Microsoft Teams data. The attackers stole the app's own credential, the one ConnectWise uses to authenticate to customer Microsoft 365 tenants on its own behalf, and used it to log in as the app itself. No password. No multi-factor prompt. Just a trusted identity that nobody thought to watch. Huntress, the security firm that first caught the activity, confirmed unauthorized sign-ins at 162 tenants by October 16. Microsoft's own numbers, published five days later, are far larger: Storm-0940 attempted sign-ins against more than 2,250 Microsoft 365 tenants, at a rate of roughly 2,900 attempts per minute. Huntress separately found nearly 1,000 tenants that had received sign-in attempts from the attacker's infrastructure, with more than 300 showing...

If you’ve ever had a ConnectWise Cloud Backup or SkyKick app in Microsoft 365, disable it (don’t delete it) and check every app for secrets added since Oct. 13 that you didn’t create. Then hunt in all your identity providers. IOCs and details (3/3): expel.com/blog/storm-0...

The SkyKick response needs a tenant-by-tenant record, not one green checkmark for the MSP. What access changed? Which logs cover it? What can you restore? Our guide includes a worksheet and read-only hunt starters. https://deceptioncheck.ai/blog/skykick-application-access-response
