Those businesses command fewer votes in practice than the smallholders do, and that model of political corruption depends heavily on leaning on the public image of those smallholders.

the Senate was put into place more or less to entrench the interests of rural smallholders against northeastern mercantile interests! the fact that it now benefits the right because it overrepresents the smallest, poorest states is essentially a post-19th Amendment accident.
