💻🇺🇸👀 A hacker has broken into the secure TeleMessage app used by Mike Waltz and gained access to the contacts and messages of more than 60 US officials.

The White House is “aware of the incident”, and Smarsh has temporarily suspended the program, Reuters adds.

Democrats almost had their own version of JD Vance: Sarah Smarsh, Kansan who wrote a well-received book about heartland struggles, then got lobbied to run for office. Coulda been a trend! harpers.org/archive/2022...

Smarsh (owner of TeleMessage) has not responded to any of my requests for comment since we reported news of the hack, despite giving statements to other outlets. I will always ping people for comment to be fair. The only result is an article without your view in it www.404media.co/signal-clone...

PRR ideas:

The 911 call.

Recordings of all comms during the 31 minutes.

GPS tracks for all on-duty uniformed officers during the 31 minutes.

All dispatch logs during the 31 minutes.

All police texts (specify the “Police SMARSH archive” during the 31 minutes.)
This is an absolutely horrific story & it's also absolutely journalist malpractice to uncritically craft it as a PPB talking points memo about Portland's police budget. And it's disgusting for the PPB to leverage their performance here into a lobbying opportunity. www.oregonlive.com/crime/2026/0...

The “TM SGNL” message was oddly different on Waltz’s phone, which quickly led people to a software vendor called TeleMessage that is based in Israel. TeleMessage is owned by Portland, Oregon-based Smarsh.

NEW: I spoke with the president of Smarsh, the company that owns TeleMessage, the Signal clone used by Mike Waltz in this photo published yesterday.

He said their app does not address any security vulnerabilities raised by Signalgate, but is simply a way to archive chats.

Well hot damn. TeleMessage suspended their service in light of the hack. A lesson to everyone not to spin up and deploy supposedly "secure" solutions half-assed
