#Sociotech
Remember when tech was 'used'?
Now, we *build* it.
That messy, human heat. ✨

But my belief is that it is most effective for students to build their worldview (critical or otherwise) around a deep understanding of the tech. Much like yours (and @abeba.blacksky.app ) is built on a similar deep understanding as well as a sociotech critique.

And a sociotech era and generation on the cusp of inherting it as their way of life, gets that seminal event dropped on them as something to forever claw out of.

How can I share in progress work with people if it is work I would not want put in an LLM. What kinds of thinking or creativity are accelerated while what kinds are thwarted? And more interestingly, what kinds of new forms will work need to take pushing new sociotech frictions?

Stupid question but how much does this apply to an autocrat who clearly thinks that he is the legitimacy and he still has enough ride or die-ers to make that vision a reality? Parallels aside, I hazard a revolution set in such a differing sociotech conditions are applicable in the here & now, cmiiw.

ATM we see an attack on many fronts: censoring books, research, and forms of expressions thru twisted freedom of speech claims & ideological claims about sexuality & gender; all-around budget cuts on education; defunding of libraries; deskilling thru sociotech tools. Mucho clever but very evil.
Curtailing people’s ability to read widely and carefully, to locate, assess, and compare different sources for themselves, and to write in their own voice about what they find and what it means, is arguably more effective than censorship. It is also one of the most obvious effects of generative AI.

Sometimes my discipline has worthwhile findings (even though the rest of the field seems AI-boosters).

Anyways, re-linking our piece on consumer resistance movements to sociotech transitions (hopefully also a worthwhile finding; about cashless society, but is generalizable to instances like AI).

Lets talk about how lists are used. In sociotech, we look at qualities of feature appropriation. Faithful appropriation - using a feature as intended, and unfaithful - using it "for other reasons". Unfaithful doesn't inherently mean negative. It means there's a need the user has that isn't met 1/11
Lists and starter packs used for harassment will not be visible to other users in the Bluesky app. Existing subscribers will remain subscribed to the list.

I'm in the work chat, typing out a sociotech systems analysis

"why the product team, the AI modeling team & the runtime engineering team always seem to miss each other"

it involves a materialist analysis of conflicting incentive structures etc

Concerns re DSC hv focused on how much power it'll hv. I'm more concerned about how & on whom it'll wield that power. To mitigate, DSC policies, analyses, decisions must meaningfully integrate substantive equality & honest clear-eyed assessmt of sociotech power dynamics. www.leaf.ca/publication/...

We've talked about thls before, but was quite obvious to me that your use of the sociotech term was based on this foundation. And not @nick-tune.me"s. ☺️ Although that fits too. Just different.

Dear Santa.

This year I wish "Real Life Mag" to come back from the ashes ;)

(I know it's hard and probably not doable without a millionaire backing it. But I miss it a lot, it was such a crucial place for intelligent sociotech discourse)

mini conclusion
possible to decompose the sociotech system into diff contributors: tutors, learnings, content creators, others, & think abt their engagement in the systs/make design choices that address concerns/needs for these groups

sociotech - seems to have to do w/ center ppl, rights, values, accountability, trust, minimizing risks
reconfiguring how ppl are affected
[he says in common w/ DESIGN JUSTICE but DJ would probably see this as too top down]
