Apple's Pages is good and Word-compatible if you don't need too much fancy Word autoformatting or redline compatibility. The new version is a bit nagware-ish, but if you don't want AI (I don't), you can just use the free version. Alternatively, Libreoffice is free and OSS, or try SoftMakerOffice.

I've been using SoftmakerOffice for years because it's got such rock-solid file compatibility with Office & is so much faster than LibreOffice. Alas, they seem to be getting into AI so I might be back on LibreOffice soon.

(FWIW I switched to SoftmakerOffice years ago because at that time the file conversions were just rock solid. At that time I would still see glitches with how Word-format files opened up in Office after edits in OpenOffice. There's a free version. That said I'm sure Libre's fine.)

Wow, #softmakeroffice is really pleasant to work in, if you don't hate MS Office. I've used many of the major Linux-compatible office suites (LibreOffice, OpenOffice) and am impressed enough with SoftMaker that I upgraded from #freeoffice to the paid version.
