thinking about the potential avenues for spaceships and orgasns is interesting, like a solarsail being so fragile and needing to know if its damaged meaning you can be super gentle and soft with them can totally give a ship a dry orgasm

but what about other parts? like the reactor? the engines?
sailparts are big and fragile and you need to know where they're damaged if you can effect repairs. yes.
do you think solar sails for spaceships are really sensitive, do they shiver and whimper when you accidently brush against them

Be Data and paint birds from a dream. Be Ben Sisko and build your own solarsail spaceship. Be the doctor and take holo photos. Be Trip and play harmonica after work.

It’s on us to make this culture of appreciation of history, art and craftsmanship happen, in parallel to where technology is going.

My first positive detection of the 12U bus of the #ACS 3 #SolarSail (with the sail not yet deployed, so 12U bus only)
From Leiden, the Netherlands, at a range of 1118 km.
Framestack of 102 frames with a WATEC 902H2S + 1.2/85 mm lens.

I observed @NASA 's #ACS3 #Solarsail pass over Leiden, the Netherlands at 20:26 UTC (29 Aug).
It was not particularly bright (briefly mag +3, most of the time much fainter). Canon EOS 80D + 1.4/35 mm lens at F2.0, 5 seconds ISO 800.

This is a very fragmentary brightness curve. NOTE: peaks are saturated, and during some lows it was invisible. Lost track of it a couple of times. But very clear there is a significant brightness variation #ACS3 #solarsail

Hiya, Womble. I'm catching up on your blog for my TBR. This week's read for me: Challenging The Tides An Anthology of Hope. (proofing before our Fantasycon launch!)

Did you know...?

At certain times during the week of September 8th, the largest ever "solar sail" will be visible in the sky above London.

Unexpectedly the sky cleared tonight. So here are planet #Venus (at right in 1st pic), space station #ISS entering the Earth's shadow at 18:36 CET, and Starlink #G9-12, launched yesterday. I did also observe NASA's #ACS3 #SolarSail, but camera failed. @leonoor.bsky.social @daveatcogs.bsky.social

I'll post a thread tomorrow, but for now sharing our new preprint: "Thermal management and photonic design of solar and laser sails"

We discuss light sails (both solar sails and laser-driven sails) from the perspective of optical materials and thermal management minds.wisc.edu/items/dfbe2a... 🧪💡

Oh god, that's so beautiful. And such immaculate vibes~✨

Just give me a solarsail and let me roadtrip around SOL a bit. Take some pics, make a smoothie and catch the sunrise on Deimos.

Pretty bright high eastern pass of NASA's #ACS3 #SolarSail this evening 3 December 2024. Images taken from 18:14 to 18:16 UT. Exposure times 8 seconds. It was flaring less regular than it used to do in the past two months. @annqld1.bsky.social @leonoor.bsky.social @sjbastro.bsky.social

NASA’s biggest missions often begin years earlier as experimental technologies.

During Artemis II, NASA’s optical communications system sent more than 484 GB of data.

NASA's newly unfurled solar sail has started 'tumbling' end-over-end in orbit, surprising observations show
A NASA spacecraft erected a large, foil solar sail in orbit around Earth last week, after a failed attempt days earlier. However, subsequent observations of the spacecraft show it is "tumbling or wobb...
