#booksky #books 7000 Doctor Who New Adventures : Shakedown / Terrance Dicks (Virgin 1995) retweeking and greatly expanding his own (Doctorless) straight-to-video story which was all about Sontarans invading a new spaceship - adds interesting episodes relating to their Forever War with the Rutans

Oh my Sontarans

My Classic Who list is basically moderately paced, recognisable strong serials that give you the basics - time travel, Sarah Jane, Sontarans, space travel, horror/bubble wrap and the Fourth Doctor, straight to Cybermen, the Master, Gallifrey and the first two Doctors, then Remembrance.

This is THE best description of Flux. And also Trial of a Time Lord. Both cannot exist without the circumstances they came about in, I'm glad both exist even if yes, it makes no bloody sense.

And War of the Sontarans is one of the most metal Doctor Who episodes EVER.
Flux is one of my all-time favourite Who stories.
It's dumb, stupid, noisy, makes no sense, and by the end Chibnall is trying to nail fog to a flag in a storm and missing every time.
But it's also brilliant. Quintessential Who. And I love it.
And the ballboy gag is worth the entrance fee alone

When did the Sontarans get to Earth?

I know consensus seems to be Village of the Angels is the best, and that is a solid and very good episode, but I just can't help but think about how utterly ludicrously over the top and grand War of the Sontarans is and how it's so METAL. Just a production triumph.

The Rutans had featured in The Horror of Fang Rock, as well as the direct-to-video production Shakedown: The Return of the Sontarans, and were deemed to be more interesting for audio than the actual Sontarans, who would have to wait until 2011 to appear in a Big Finish production.

It also denies us Lisa Bowerman's voice with Rutan processing.

The reveals are tied up in a complex situation involving Rutan rebels wanting to stop a Rutan plan to wipe out the Sontarans, which comes into play far too late to be impactful.

At least we have the rather lovely final scene where the real Bev meets the real Benny, who arrives just in time to watch her Rutan duplicate get blown up by the Sontarans. The two go drinking together and discover their shared mutual acquaintance.

I'm sure they are working on it. It might take a little bit before they release it but they'll do it.
By the way, when did the Sontarans come to earth? Does the Doctor know?

The bit where the Sontarans suddenly disappear is a cracker…!

I love this story not just for its sheer horror but its intelligence, expectations subverted and the ultimate blasphemous revelation buried deep:
What *is* the Image of the Fendahl…?
Why, humanity is made in its Image, and nor are we out of it.

For reasons that now entirely escape me, I’m watching all of Doctor who in order again. No 97 “The Invasion of Time” Feb-Mar ‘78.
By now Star Wars was everywhere, even if we hadn’t seen it yet, Blake’s 7 exploded onscreen and I’d started playing DnD with friends.
Doctor Who was looking very tired…

@Printdevil That would almost make sense. Considering how much variation we've seen in the cloned Sontarans, it's not much of a stretch to explain away all the different Bonds.

If they want two-parters, Daleks in Manhattan is a possibility (because Daleks) but it's a bit goofy (and a bit cheap looking) and I don't see them making a big marketing push around Sontarans.
