#Sortition
I do not support sortition for federal office but I 100% support sortition for local government. Like jury duty but for lawmaking
The word for this political system is "Sortition," and it's more or less how Athenian political officials were chosen.

sortition solves this
I’d have to say one of the biggest problems with politics is that a lot of the people who want to be in politics are crazy nuts

yep, juries are about the only place we use it in the American context, and imo you probably don’t want a sortition body making policy all by itself, but it makes a great way of boiling The People down into a small group for sanity-checking stuff. (sortition Senate with a suspensive veto, anyone?)

They really should abolish the Lords and appoint the replacements by sortition.

It's a system that's effectively immune to political corruption, whatever its other failings are.

You can also have Sortition produce things like random representative groups (like Juries) to then vote on political officials, which might avoid the "no career expert politicans" problem.

The HoL should be filled by sortition.

My political proposal is that we have a system more or less as we have it now, except with the addition of ranked choice voting, an expanded legislature, and the sortition appointment of a single person making the medium income whose job is to sit in any given legislative or executive meeting.

With tweaks to fix obvious problems (only men being allowed for one), I still believe that sortition is the best form of democracy.

An excellent endorsement for sortition tbh

Politics naturally selects these types of sociopathic narcissists, so I’m coming around on the idea of sortition as a selection method.
we’re all obviously talking about Michigan but you have to see this closer from Roger Marshall that’s maybe the worst political ad I’ve ever seen

Optimal political system: a lower house with 4-6 ruthlessly whipped professional parties of bloodless technocrats elected by list PR, upper house with full blocking powers chosen by sortition

grand juries are holding up better than any of the three branches of government tbh

Depends what flavor of PR you use. Ranked ballot would help some, but I think multi-rep districts with runoff votes would work the best in context of voting.

I'm in favor of getting rid of voting and parties and having sortition instead. Can't gerrymander that.

It's all incrementalism -- slow-moving constitutional convention build precedent by precedent. This why term limits and Court expansion are not enough. Nothing short of disempowering individual Justices will do. A sortition scheme and jurisdiction stripping are essential.
I looked up the firm currently arguing for preschools' religious right to refuse to enroll kids w gay parents

turns out it's the same firm that argued for a right to refuse to provide adoption services to gay couples, & to opt kids out of books w LGBTQ characters

Instead judges would be chosen through sortition among federal judges (with limits on experience and their record of ethics, of course), who themselves would now be nominated and elected by non-partisan state boards restricted to judicial experts.

I'm good with mandatory voting, and would also entertain other democratic "innovations" (from the ancient world) like selective use of sortition, post-election audits, etc.
