#Soxhlet
Please note such benefits have been widely known since 1886 when German chemist Franz von Soxhlet used Louis Pasteur's method of heating to stop the milk from spoiling... The treatment destroys dangerous bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria without changing the milk's basic nutrition.

New research comparing Arabica and Robusta found key differences in hardness, lipids, colour and antioxidant activity. Arabica led on phenolics and antioxidants, while Soxhlet extraction recovered the most beneficial compounds. Read more: bit.ly/4cvglYC

When I was in grad school, the thing I really wanted to do "for the lulz" was soxhlet. Just cuz it's a cool piece of glassware. Not making probably the single most reviled pariah molecule in chemistry

Spent coffee grounds yielded about 90% of the oil recovered by Soxhlet, but with only 0.3% impurities instead of 3.9%. The remaining biomass was preserved for further use. doi.org/hccfrt
Spent coffee grounds reveal a route to biodiesel and other bio-based products
Coffee grounds that usually end up being thrown away can have a second life as a raw material for producing biofuels and other high-value-added products.

Good thing I'm a chemist and not an artist... My impression of a Soxhlet extraction setup from a conversation earlier today. #realtimechem

I read a paper the other day where they used a (repurposed) tea bag to run a soxhlet. Tea leaves would do the job nicely, but preferably in an expensive thimble.

Legit question, but how expensive are the thimbles? I love Soxhlet extraction, but was always a little shocked at the price of thimbles (this might only be a #AustralianProblem).

I can't seem to find any stores with those exact models, but they're Soxhlet extractors and condensers for liquid-solid extraction from what I'm seeing. Kinda like from your gold thing the other day XD

As an undergraduate chemist we did soxhlet extraction of piperonal from black pepper. It took me about 5 minutes to work out the synthesis steps from there to MDMA.

However, the economics of buying black pepper meant it was cheaper and easier for us just to buy pills on the open market. 😆

Thorough Chemical Characterization of Boerhavia elegans: GC-MS and LC-MS Analysis of Leaf and Root Extracts #ACSOmega pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Thorough Chemical Characterization of Boerhavia elegans: GC-MS and LC-MS Analysis of Leaf and Root Extracts
The phytochemical composition of Boerhavia elegans remains poorly understood, particularly in its leaves and roots, despite the plant’s traditional medicinal use. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive chemical characterization using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Sequential Soxhlet extraction with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol yielded extracts ranging from 0.86 to 12.07%, with methanol providing the highest recoveries (12.07% in leaves, 10.01% in roots). GC-MS analysis of leaf hexane extracts identified 12 compounds (86% of total content), dominated by fatty acids (palmitic and oleic acids, 28.9%) and steroids (38.5%), particularly stigmast-5-en-3-ol (27.0%). Ethyl acetate fractions were enriched in sterols (42.5%), including stigmasterol and campesterin. LC-MS profiling of methanol extracts revealed bioactive molecules, including lutein, echinulin, pheophorbide a, and pectolinarigenin. The prevalence of sterols, fatty acids, flavonoids, and chlorophyll derivatives with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities underscores the pharmaceutical potential of Boerhavia elegans. These findings provide the first quantitative insight into the chemical diversity of Boerhavia elegans leaves and roots, establishing a foundation for its future use in medicinal and pharmaceutical applications.

Comprehensive Characterization of Aroma Compounds in Four Different Varieties of Cigar Tobacco Leaves from China Using HS-SPME-GC × GC-TOF-MS Combined with Flavor Profiling #ACSOmega pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Comprehensive Characterization of Aroma Compounds in Four Different Varieties of Cigar Tobacco Leaves from China Using HS-SPME-GC × GC-TOF-MS Combined with Flavor Profiling
In order to conduct in-depth research on the stylistic characteristics of different varieties of cigar tobacco leaves (CTLs), we have carried out the following research work: first, the Soxhlet extraction method was utilized for the pretreatment of 4 different varieties of CTLs currently available in China. Then, the two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS) technology was applied for the nontargeted flavoromics analysis of CTLs. A total of 2117 volatile compounds were identified in the extracts of the 4 CTLs varieties, encompassing alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and their derivatives, esters, hydrocarbons, alkenes, heterocyclic compounds, and aromatics. Results from multivariate statistical analyses (principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA)) revealed significant differences in the volatile compound profiles among different CTL varieties. Based on the relative odor activity value (ROAV) analysis, key flavor compounds were determined for each variety, contributing to the unique aroma profiles of the cigars. Overall, the 4 CTLs shared similar flavor profiles, characterized by sweetness, fruitiness, greenness, nuttiness, and floral notes, with BX1 and DX2 particularly standing out in sweetness and BX1 additionally prominent in fruitiness. HY101, however, was relatively lacking in these flavor attributes compared to the other 3 varieties. Nine key differential compounds─1-butanol, 3-methyl; 1-hexanol; benzeneacetaldehyde; naphthalene; benzaldehyde; isophorone; 2-heptanone, furan, 2-pentyl; and pyrazine, trimethyl, and trimethylpyrazine─were identified as the characteristic markers among different CTL varieties. We believe that this study will not only provide important value for the analysis of flavor characteristics and variety identification of cigar tobacco leaves but also offer scientific basis for improving the quality and market advantages of cigar tobacco leaves.

On open days we'd set up a DCM soxhlet of spinach leaves and you'd get a lovely green solution, but if you spotted that solution on a tlc plate and ran it you'd get a green spot on the baseline and a running yellow spot for beta-carotene. Which if left under fluorescent lab lighting would fade out.
