#Soxhlet
Please note such benefits have been widely known since 1886 when German chemist Franz von Soxhlet used Louis Pasteur's method of heating to stop the milk from spoiling... The treatment destroys dangerous bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria without changing the milk's basic nutrition.

CSIHKAL - Cheesesteaks I Have Known And Loved, gonna start a Shulgin-style diary, cram a shack to the gunwales: rusty drums of cheesesteak precursors, grimy soxhlet cheese condensers, exotic meat cuts floating in formalin, dusty jars of semiunreacted cheesesteak synthesis byproducts just lyin around

When I was in grad school, the thing I really wanted to do "for the lulz" was soxhlet. Just cuz it's a cool piece of glassware. Not making probably the single most reviled pariah molecule in chemistry

Spent coffee grounds yielded about 90% of the oil recovered by Soxhlet, but with only 0.3% impurities instead of 3.9%. The remaining biomass was preserved for further use. doi.org/hccfrt
Spent coffee grounds reveal a route to biodiesel and other bio-based products
Coffee grounds that usually end up being thrown away can have a second life as a raw material for producing biofuels and other high-value-added products.

5 Key Advantages of Ultrasonic Extraction Over Conventional Solvent Methods
A cannabis extractor runs the same Soxhlet protocol for six hours to pull cannabinoids from a single batch of biomass. A food scientist waits a full hour to extract beta-carotene from carrot waste using hexane. A nutraceutical formulator spends days macerating botanicals before any active compound shows up in solution. All three are using methods ... Do you know who Louis Pasteur and Frans von Soxhlet are and why their discoveries were lauded as important?

What was life expectancy before their discoveries?

Visit your local library and ask your librarian for help finding books on food history specifically books before Louis Pasteur discovered pasteurization in 1860 and Frans von Soxhlet suggested it be used for milk.

Yeah, Franz von Soxhlet was just wasting his time.

this is a very random ask but does anyone in Baltimore have a Soxhlet extractor I can borrow for a few days next week?? any size would work!

(and as long as we’re asking- if I could get 30min on a 400 or higher NMR later on that’d be amazing. It’s a summer research project for a student)
