This dramatic young man has a long bar through his nose and holds a personified spearthrower, ready to kick butt! Although he’s #Maya, stylistically he’s central #Mexican (more formal and blockier) because he’s from #ChichenItza, where Maya and #Toltec cultures came together. Harmoniously? Hardly! 🏺

8. Her daddy taught her!

Her father was a Gesi spearthrower who learned to adapt it to a hand-to-hand style from Doman lancers, and he passed that on to her.

The ongoing environmental devastation attributable to human activity could almost certainly have been avoided had the species not evolved a great throwing arm. And if they'd not developed a pyromaniacal proficiency. And if they'd not [fill in multiple blanks here].

In Pleistocene Europe, the spearthrower is best associated with the Magdalenian, but the shapes of points indicate a shift to lighter shafts, implying a shift towards the spearthrower, even in the Gravettian. These cultures hunted mobile ungulates, such as Cervus and Rangifer, not giant megafauna.
September 25, 2023 at 7:00 AM
Even in North America, where the use of the spearthrower was widespread during the Pleistocene, it's role in any overkill of very big mammals, is thus suspect. Much is made of the travel distance, of atlatl darts, but their accuracy is best at shorter ranges, of 20 meters or less.

The reed 'spear' is a related introduction from New Guinea. It is quite useless thrown by hand, and its origins might be related to arrow manufacture. However, its likely of later introduction than is the woomera, having a more restricted distribution, but one tied to that of the spearthrower.
September 25, 2023 at 5:55 AM
Little suggests that the woomera or spearthrower has great antiquity in Australia. The simplest Australian woomeras, as opposed to derived paddle or lath shaped woomera types, and and multitool versions, do resemble the more conservative, New Guinean type.

Usually the slaughter of megafauna is attributed to the aboriginal spearthrower and dart. The problem is uncertainty as to its prehistoric space and time of distribution, being absent from Tasmania, the Melville & Bathurst Islands, and some parts of Eastern Australia. (From Davidson)
