As someone who works in public assistance for the Elderly, the number one thing I see is clients and their kids/grandkids avoiding the unpleasant realities of aging until suddenly "later" is now, and they have to sell the house and spenddown life savings to 3K before we'll pay anything.

So incredibly frustrated. MIL's work switched providers 3/1. Seriously?!? Who does that? Now we have to meet that 1k spenddown for 2 mos of Kaiser, then the new spenddown of Premera.🤯🤬

Actually, yes, I will say words about spenddowns. That is when clients qualify for medicaid, but their income is "high" (like above poverty level 🤬). Every six months, spenddown started over and clients had to submit medical expenses, like a deductible, to qualify for medicaid benefits again.

I only qualify for Medicaid from my spenddown for my Medicare Suppliment; it helps me qualify for Medicaid. I live in New York, and Medicaid is administrated differently in every state.

One of the donors to my nonprofit just invited us to RE-APPLY for funds (they gave us $100,000 for our scholarship program). Well now they’re saying we can have THIS. That is 30 women receiving $10,000 EACH from me and us receiving $60,000 in general operating funds.

But for my brother... Missouri is a 209(b) state.
That means it has at least one criterion for Medicaid eligibility that is more restrictive than SSI's. (And this is not a Red State thing. Minnesota and Illinois are also 209(b) states.)

suddenly have to get something significantly costly medically, she can qualify potentially to apply for what is called a Medicaid SPENDDOWN program. This can cover the month's medical costs that eat up a certain percentage of your combined income. Designed for catastrophic medical costs.

The problem is most states aren't very aware of this rule and will try to either kick DACs off Medicaid or make them do spenddown.
The SSA basically says "talk to your state's Medicaid about it" but does not give good guidance for how to do it.

I only have my SS. I receive $144 a month too much to qualify for Medicaid without a spenddown. I receive $98 a month in food stamps. Every $ in my SS is paid on bills. If it weren't for a dear friend I would have no place to live. Once these cuts happen I will probably be living in my car homeless

You're quite welcome! I used tanf & snap to get through college and was a state caseworker for a while. I keep up on this shit & try to explain stuff to people when I see misconceptions or if people ask questions. I didn't even go into the spenddown fuckery. Whew! It's kinda weird & complex &

I haven't been able to find out if you're allowed to just sign away your interest or if the SSA expects you to be given fair market compensation and then do a spenddown on that money before SSI benefits can start.

There are people who are making frivolous purchases in a spenddown every single month to keep under assets, which is at odds with the theory of why you'd have an asset cap in the first place. We're making the public subsidize this to avoid the public having to subsidize this sort of thing.
