Spiroplasma Display an Intricate Continuum of Infection Heterogeneity and Persistence in Myrmica Ants
Many bacterial taxa evolved facultative symbiotic associations with insects and spread through host populations by horizontal and maternal transmission. Co-infection at the individual host level may ...

8/ Wolbachia isn't the only intracellular symbiont that can affect insect reproduction. There are others, including Spiroplasma.

Spiroplasma also protects Drosophila hosts against parasitic nematodes--and it can interact with Wolbachia.

It was pleasure to give a talk about bacterial symbionts at @idiv-research.bsky.social conf. ‘26 in Jena, Germany! It was abstract version of my PhD research, and if you are interested to know more about experimental evolution of symbionts (Spiroplasma) in novel hosts, happy to discuss further 🧬 🦠

It’s a pleasure to receive this recognition, as all the talks were truly fabulous! Many thanks to iDiv, and a special shoutout to my amazing technicians, who went above and beyond to assist me with challenging experiments and counting thousands of flies 🪰 #Spiroplasma #evolution

John Jaenike did follow up for mites moving spiroplasma symbionts, which made the same shift (will group-》mel). It worked and he did get heritable transmission in recipient mel at a low rate. Which was very cool.
