This is untrue: the entire HMRC backend could just be a big Splitwise
"The entire HMRC backend could be rebuilt with £1k of Claude tokens" is a statement so completely disqualifying it hard to know where to start

I got to the airport and all the girls settled up in Splitwise

I’ve been using @tricount to split expenses, which I picked for the cost over @Splitwise, but my main way of working with it now is through an unofficial MCP server rather than the app.

Group Travel Expenses Shouldn't Require Math: Why We Built a Zero-Friction Splitwise Alternative
Planning a vacation with friends is exciting until the final morning arrives and someone opens a messy spreadsheet. Over a four-day trip, four people might share dozens of separate costs: one person books the holiday rental, someone else pays for highway tolls, someone else covers an expensive dinner, and another person orders groceries and airport taxis. When everyone returns home, the settlement nightmare begins. You end up with a web of confusing debts: David owes Alice, Alice owes Bob, Charlie owes David, and nobody agrees on the exact total. Worse, traditional expense-splitting apps have introduced artificial paywalls, restricting users to three daily expense entries or demanding that every friend download a bulky native app and create a new account just to split a lunch tab. We built **BotSplit (botsplit.com)** to eliminate this friction entirely. Operating directly as a lightweight Telegram Mini App, it allows travel groups to track shared expenses and settle balances in minimal transfers with zero app downloads. Here is why group expense tracking often breaks down during travel, and how modern expense settling fixes it. ### Why Existing Expense Tools Frustrate Travelers Most popular expense apps were originally designed over a decade ago. Over time, many have added unnecessary layers of monetization and friction that ruin the experience on vacation: 1. **Aggressive daily paywalls:** Popular tools like Splitwise now cap free users at just a handful of expenses per day. When a group of friends makes multiple small purchases across an afternoon, you hit a paywall before dinner arrives. This has pushed travelers to look for a reliable **Splitwise alternative**. 2. **App download resistance:** In any travel group, there is always at least one friend with a full phone storage who refuses to download another 150MB native app, verify an SMS code, or remember a password. 3. **The cross-currency headache:** Border-hopping vacations mean buying breakfast in EUR, paying tolls in PLN, and having dinner in USD or GEL. Manually checking historical currency conversion rates after a busy trip is tedious and leads to arguments over exchange rates. 4. **Too many wire transfers:** Without intelligent settlement, four friends can end up making ten separate small transfers to each other instead of just two or three clean payments. Vacations should be about making memories, not spending your last evening doing accounting at the airport terminal. ### Settle in Minimal Transfers Without the Math The secret to clean group accounting is treating money as fungible rather than tracking every individual debt path. Instead of making person A pay person B while person B pays person C, modern balance settling calculates each traveler's net balance: total money contributed minus fair share consumed. Once net balances are calculated, the system matches debtors directly with creditors. For example, on a weekend trip with four friends: * Alice paid for the accommodation and is owed $120 overall. * Bob covered groceries and is owed $40 overall. * Charlie enjoyed the meals and owes $60 overall. * David took part in activities and owes $100 overall. Instead of four friends sending confusing payments back and forth across multiple days, the settlement works out cleanly in three direct steps: 1. David transfers $100 to Alice. David is settled. 2. Charlie transfers $20 to Alice. Alice is fully settled. 3. Charlie transfers $40 to Bob. Everyone is settled. Everyone receives their money, and the group settles a dozen shared bills in just three simple transfers. ### Instant Multi-Currency Handling When traveling across countries, you should never have to open an exchange rate calculator at the restaurant table. BotSplit records each transaction in the local currency paid, whether it is coffee in euros, train tickets in lari, or museum passes in dollars. When it is time to wrap up the holiday, the platform automatically converts net balances into the group's agreed base currency using fair mid-market exchange rates. Nobody has to argue over bank markups or yesterday's conversion shifts. To see how easy this is in real scenarios, explore our step-by-step guides on how to **split a dinner bill** and how to **split travel expenses**. ### Why a Telegram Mini App Is the Perfect Fit The best tool on a trip is the tool everyone already has installed. Because almost every friend group already uses messaging apps to coordinate travel itineraries, placing the expense tracker inside Telegram removes every barrier: * **Zero Installs:** Open **@spbill_bot** directly inside your existing travel chat. A single tap launches the full interactive interface inside Telegram. * **Smart Receipt Scanning:** Snap a photo of a crumpled restaurant bill, and our optical recognition extracts line items, applies tips proportionally, and lets friends claim individual dishes with a single tap. * **Real-Time Visibility:** Everyone in the chat sees expenses appear immediately, keeping the budget completely transparent from day one to departure. Group travel should bring friends closer together, not spark debates over who paid for the airport taxi. Next time you head out for a weekend getaway, try running your trip ledger on **botsplit.com** or launch **@spbill_bot** in Telegram and settle up in seconds.

Splitting a restaurant bill can turn a fun dinner into an awkward maths exercise. This is why Splitwise has rolled out a new free feature called Itemize that lets one person snap a photo of the receipt and have the app sort out exactly who owes what. Itemize feature can divide tax and tip proportionally on Splitwise, so nobody has to overpay for a dish they never touched.

Splitwise tells you who owes what. It won't tell you whose couch this actually is. Different problem, different tool.

Hey @apoorvk.bsky.social: I don't need a reminder to use the Splitwise app.

When I want/need to use the Splitwise app….I'll use the Splitwise app.

And don't love having notifications turned on that I didn't ask for.

The travel expense-splitting app basically everyone uses just got smaller.

Splitwise added a daily limit to its free tier. No public number on what it actually is — hit it, and you either wait it out or pay for Pro.

Full breakdown (and the free app that still has no cap) is in this week's Wire.

The future of software is hyper-personal. Whoever happens to pay for dinner, everyone will just use their individual vibe-coded Splitwise knockoff.

The fact that #splitwise is the de-facto standard for tracking debts shows how little "the best one on the free market wins" actually applies.

I'm very biased, but #settleup is such a superior product with so much better #ux.

Like the #1 feature why I'm using software like #settleup is to immediately see who should pay next to balance the debts. It allows us to have nice, near zero debts over a short trip or in a multi-year group. #splitwise has nothing even remotely close to that (yes I know there is "simplify […]
