Possibly my most controversial product & UX take is that I don't trust UX/product people who don't play video games in depth.

I think it makes you a worse designer, and you should take a deep interest in game design.

Video games are the purest distillation of UX practice.

why does Krita have such terrible UX

i think the real problem is most automakers are actually really bad at UX and UI

this is also a UX/UI problem.
I don’t want a touchscreen I want reliable analog knobs

product teams have completely stopped pretending they care about UX
the Absolute State of Tech Enshittification is finding >5 year old bug-fix posts on an official product forum regarding the same bug you're newly encountering on a purchase from 2 days ago 😕

As part of the Oct 26 Steam Fest I played some of the demos and recorded talking about what I thought in terms of UX.

Caveats: I know this developer personally and this is not a full UX analysis.

During the Oct 26 Steam Next Fest I played some demos and recorded talking over them from a UX Researchers perspective.

This is "MOLTYN" from Hingston Digital:

This isn't a full UX analysis, rather it is my UX thoughts as I go through the game.

I want anytype to fix their UX so I can leave notion behind but I'm just like waiting like a bitch.

The barrage of unsolicited popup messages is a UX scourge across the board and just primes you to instinctively swat it away like spam. Just completely counter-intuitive interface design and whenever I've asked UX designers about this trend it seems to come from a deeply cynical and spiteful mindset

Insanely good take, UX desingers need to understand JUICE from game design

This is directly parallel to how UX design thoughtthinkers are on LinkedIn crowing how Claude Design lets us "do strategy—not pixel pushing", meanwhile design's access to the rooms where strategy is being done has NEVER been more constrained.

GenAI concentrates power in the manager class only!
I keep seeing people mentioning how ai-generated code lets you spend more time thinking about what the app should do, but I think there’s a need to remember that there are large groups of engineers whose role hasn’t been redefined to include that level of control and trust.

Brad Myers' Pick, Click, Flick is a historical reference of UX interaction, cataloging the evolution of UX over the decades. As a historical record of what has been built, the book is reasonably thorough.

While reading through it though, I found myself wanting more reflection from the author on...

I think that a lot of ux people who work in B2B or b2c in other markets within ux & product think of video games as a segment, in reality, it's kind of the other way around.

UX is a part of gamification not necessarily the other way around.

The disconnection that a lot of product people have

Ad blocking is UX and accessibility
There are many things I could say about how the @bostonglobe.com should improve its website. But here's my top complaint: an ad-serving platform that causes stories to jerk up and down and even reload while you're trying to read them. You want to keep your new digital subscribers? Fix it.
