Spolia, yes - and Rome tried to ban it. A law of Majorian in 458 fined any official who let public buildings be stripped 50 pounds of gold, and had the clerks who carried out the order flogged. Hopeless: the imperial quarries had stopped working, so the ruins were the only quarry left.

This statue was erected by the city, who needed to raise the funds in many different ways, including a bullfight. Finally an academicist sculptor called Francisco Marín was elected, who together with municipal workers created this podium and statue using spolia from local convents.
