The Super El Niño is breaking charts as well as records, including Climate Reanalyzer's, which previously went to 30 degrees C but had to be updated today. SSTs in this part of the Pacific are in unprecedented territory - and rising - roughly two months before the typical El Niño peak.

Today's daily RONI* update brought to you by free in-flight wi-fi.

*Charts not yet automatically generated. Before that happens, I need to include longer-term averages alongside them because ENSO is not defined by daily SSTs. (And time to make those charts!)

Global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in September 2026 shattered the previous September record and were only slightly lower than the all-time record set last month. September is typically the 6th warmest month for SSTs - but this September would have set a record in all but 1 other month. 🔥🔥🔥

The Mediterranean is getting warmer, and marine heatwaves are a defining feature of that change.

In 2024, it recorded its highest number of MHW days in two decades.

Mean SSTs reached 1.23°C above the 1982–2024 baseline, rising at 0.32 ± 0.01°C per decade.

nice thread Daniel, but I'm not sure I get your point here. If we're interested in global influence on ocean heat & evaporation, we wouldn't look to the Nino3.4 region anyway, we'd look further west where absolute SSTs are still the highest:

Wednesday El Niño update - The explanation for why SSTs are still at record high levels in the Niño 3.4 region is because of both climate change + El Niño. Far-reaching ENSO teleconnections are more dependent on temperature gradients, & relative SSTs are actually more similar to other strong events.

🌊 Mediterranean Sea saw record marine heatwave activity in 2024, with average SSTs 1.23°C above baseline. The eastern basin was most extreme, continuing a 0.32°C per decade warming trend since 1982.
