Global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in September 2026 shattered the previous September record and were only slightly lower than the all-time record set last month. September is typically the 6th warmest month for SSTs - but this September would have set a record in all but 1 other month. 🔥🔥🔥

Something weird is going on with global SSTs.

How much does normalcy bias affect media reporting?

Here is a chart of global sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) from 1982 to 2026 with the years 2023, 2024 and 2025 omitted.

As of June 27th, global SSTs have set 26 daily record highs in a row.

Media? Is there anybody out there?

Warmest June sea surface temperature (SSTs) on record for the Mediterranean Sea (compared to all Junes). 36% of the Mediterranean Sea had the single warmest June SSTs (since 1940).

Global sea surface temperatures have once again broken the 21°C barrier. On Feb. 16, 2025, global SSTs hit 21.013°C.

Since 1982, the only other years to see global SSTs breaking 21°C were 2023 and 2024.

Crazy rapid heating going on right now in the world's oceans as global sea surface temperatures continue to spike.

SSTs are roughly 25 days away from their mid-year peak. Will they break 21.0°C again? The climate 8-ball says that SSTs are the canary in the ... oh, never mind.

Global sea surface temperatures continue breaking daily records, with Mar. 23 having a preliminary SST of 21.141°C, ahead of the previous daily record of 21.118°C set in 2024.

This graph shows how fast SSTs are rising compared to pre-2023 temperatures.

July SSTs for the Mediterranean Sea. First time over 27C. 🔥

The normalcy bias we're all experiencing for global sea-surface temperatures becomes apparent if we look at the graph of SSTs 1982-2026 and remove the last three years 2023, 2024, 2025 from the picture:

Quick update on global sea-surface temperatures. Here are two graphics -- one includes 2023 & 2024, the other does not.

2025 global SSTs are incredibly hot.

Global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) last month were the highest on record for any July. 12.6% of the ocean's surface had it's single warmest July. 🔥

The Mediterranean is getting warmer, and marine heatwaves are a defining feature of that change.

In 2024, it recorded its highest number of MHW days in two decades.

Mean SSTs reached 1.23°C above the 1982–2024 baseline, rising at 0.32 ± 0.01°C per decade.

Those SSTs are just absurd. More than a full degree above the climatological mean.

For those who want to see all the data and not just the 1982-2025 mean compared to 2026, the answer is yes, global sea-surface temperatures are currently at a record daily high.

The rise in SSTs represents billions of Hiroshima bombs worth of heat.

SSTs are spiking again. Mini-caution, two days does not a trend make.

The Climate 8-ball advises waiting a few more days then screaming into a pillow.

Here are the daily warming stripes for global sea-surface temperature anomalies, updated through July 17, 2025.

Can you tell that global SSTs are currently 3rd warmest on record for the day?
July 18, 2025 at 3:06 PM
Yesterday's (preliminary) global sea-surface temperature tied the all time daily record, set in 2024.

Sometimes it all happens at once and you simply run out of metaphors. In other words, SSTs are the gobsmacking canaries in the uncharted coal mine's window of opportunity.
