Earlier this year, we submitted a £4.9m bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop the Tyne Derwent Way over the next 4 yrs & support essential repairs to Dunston Staiths. It’s been a tough and highly competitive process. Unfortunately we’ve heard that our bid wasn’t successful this time.

The panel recognised the strength of our application, plans and partnership approach; the significant heritage of the Staiths; and our project’s connection to local people, nature and heritage.

We are reassessing our plans and will then resubmit our proposal.

Ruswarp, Staiths.
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

🛠️ Most people today encounter Dunston Staiths as a quiet heritage site. In the 1970s, it was a dangerous place of work.

A new film by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Peter Roberts brings that history back into view → sidegallery.co.uk/blog/coal-staiths-of-the-river-tyne

A 30-mile Tyne loop on NCN14 and NCN72, mostly in the sun, via the cycle tunnel and Scotswood Bridge (never cycled that before), passing Dunston Staiths, the Metro Centre, many bridges, with lunch at Pedalling Squares, on routes of varying quality (surface, waymarking, safety and niceness).

Its narrow, but Staiths has this bum squeezer! Dog Loup, apparently the narrowest street in the world... not sure what constitutes a street though! 😆🙈💚

Oh definitely, for some reason coal bins are now called 'staithes' by virtually everybody. It would be interesting to know how that came about.

I have a semi regular feature "over there" called Swans on the Tyne. (Around Dunston staiths usually.) However they have swanned off at the moment. Here we have Swans on the Sea.

The dog looks as though he could loup that gap quite easily. There are of course the Dog Loup stairs in the Toon.

Staiths. Have I talked about staiths ( of a different type) on here ? I do over there quite regularly. There is something quite special about staiths (as in Dunston).....

Something you only find where "Norse influence is strong".

Staiths as a landing stage/wharf & especially waterside depot for coals. Recorded 1338. OED.

There are other meanings of staiths, but that one is geographically specific. NE, Yorkshire & Norfolk.
Huge thanks to our fantastic, hard-working volunteers from Home Group for their support to get Dunston Staiths ready for open season.

The Staiths will be open for the first time this year at The Late Shows this Saturday, 9 May, from 6pm to 9.30pm (or dusk if earlier).
