But the issue is, them appearing in an area already in drought, and having water piped in for their showers, standpipes for washing up, drinking and cooking etc... festivals are often in farmers' fields, with little if any existing infrastructure.

There were leaky pipes in public ownership too and hosepipe bans, standpipes etc. it’s cheap to pretend otherwise. The real issues are overall lack of investment and shit in the rivers and coastal seas.

I’m stumped for immediate actions. In 1976 we had a severe water shortage, so there were rota cuts and standpipes etc. And I think the legal machinery for that still exists. But we aren’t there yet - structural work done since has helped.

In a scenario where there’s an obstruction in the drain, the standpipe approach most are familiar with is ideal because the water can rise up above the level of the trap to exert more pressure to clear the obstruction or push past it. That’s why US codes require an 18 inch (450 mm) min extension.

Unlike in 1976, no standpipes, the difference with 1976 was that it was a wet winter, but the #watercompanies haven't built storage capacity, so a lot of that water just ran off.
