Two-color brioche was on my must-try list forever until I found this Stephen West shawl, perfect for learning brioche. I decided to use up two mini-skein sets that were seeking a pattern for the stash-busty bit. Then I went to town on the remnants.

Before. A line of skeins and mini-skeins of yarn. From left to right, a plastic-wrapped Party of Five mini-skein set in a fade from pale to dark pink from Sweet Georgia, two full skeins of Alegria from Manos del Uruguay in palest pale blue and soft greyish navy blue, and a plastic-wrapped Party of Five mini-skein set in a fade from grass green to cornflower blue. After. A wooden armchair is covered with what the yarn turned into. A large multicolored shawl is draped over the back of the chair. On the seat of the chair are the three cowls from my previous post, plus a fan-shaped bit of brioche fabric in green and blue that was a study for later math-art wall hangings. The lingering dregs of the yarn are all tucked into a sandwich-sized Ziploc bag. The Bubbles and Brioche Shawl, by Stephen West. In addition to being my vehicle for learning two-color brioche knitting, this was also my first Stephen West pattern (another thing that had been on my list for a long time). Highly recommend, and West’s YouTube videos on how to do brioche are extremely helpful. The shawl is a crescent shape (a semicircle, really, except that the line across the top curves back). It has six sections fanning out from the center top: a brioche section in the grey/white blues, a bubbles section that mixes the two fade sets, a garter-ridge stripe section in the blues, a bubbles section in the fades, a long, long section of brioche in the blues (lots of practice!), and a final bubble section in the fades. The Bubbles and Brioche Shawl draped over a deck railing. The bubble stitch makes a pattern that looks like fish scales, and I thought it would look pretty if I alternated the colors in the two fade sets. However, there were ten colors in the two sets, and only eight colors in each fade. So, with the two fades arranged from light pink (1) to dark pink (5) and from green (A) to blue (E), the first bubble section used 1A2B3C4D, the second used 2A3B4C5D, and the third used 2B3C4D5E. This also helped make sure I didn’t run out of the colors that were on the longest part of the shawl near the outer edge.
