Two professors have shown that the census data likely overcounted population by a million. Also, Q3 GDP showed a huge decline in agriculture which wasn’t expected by economists and SARB. AgriSA then showed that StatsSA greatly exaggerated the decline. General says there’s nothing to see here.

VERDICT: Unproven.

In 2015, @StatsSA estimated that a quarter of the population (13.8 million people) lived in extreme poverty, earning R441 or less per month at the time.

That article about StatsSA data reminds me that nothing stops Trump from destroying the autonomy of Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics so they can publish false statistics about GDP growth and employment figures.

These figures have been a sore point for him and the GOP.

I have always been a StatsSA advocate… but the Census and their responses to my questions have seriously shaken my confidence in them. Plus, they do not seem to understand the concept of error in estimation from modelling. Census data is quoted to the last person when there are massive error bars…
