#StayNJ
instead we get the godawful StayNJ, which probably isn't enough money to benefite truly low-income seniors, and is too much money for the wealthy seniors.

NJ slashed Stay NJ income limits from $500k to $200k, cutting off thousands of seniors from 2027 property tax relief. Homeowners must check their status before the November 2 deadline. #NewJersey #StayNJ #PropertyTaxes #NJSeniors #TaxRelief

Mikie negotiated herself down to only making minor cuts to StayNJ before she even released her proposal, which led to Craig dragging her even further into the realm of uselessness

I don't feel too bad about people who are struggling when you have the Senior Tax freeze AND Anchor AND StayNJ subsidizing you.

I know plenty of old people who complain about it, but they've actually got plenty of money and just want to pay Florida prices instead.

I think what’s most maddening is, the legislators are well aware of the fact that the budget is fucked and that local governments are hurting. But they truly believe programs like StayNJ and ANCHOR, as well as general tax cuts are what is preventing them from losing

Honestly, I have seen the pushback on Nextdoor to even trimming StayNj a little bit and I would even favor leaving StayNJ alone if it meant pursuing a more constructive agenda on housing. I think the upside from substantial new home construction could be even better than dumping StayNJ.

We absolutely need to gut StayNJ, but housing acceleration should be negotiated first.

Not a huge believer in the idea of a bully pulpit on actually getting something done.

But I am a big believer that if an executive wants to negotiate in good faith with a legislature, they can gain concessions on their main priorities.

We don't even need to gut StayNJ for this, for instance.
September 29, 2026 at 6:36 PM
there is simply no way out without gutting StayNJ and/or okaying new taxes, primarily on the very many rich people this state has. probably both. nobody wants to do either.

I think were I an eligible voter, I would strongly consider voting Republican given that the biggest issue that my state holds over me is public transportation, I’d strongly consider voting Republican in the next gubernatorial to pay less taxes and do less boomer socialism (StayNJ).

Amazing new genre of post on NextDoor - boomers complaining that their StayNJ tax rebate check isn't big enough! 🙃

According to @policyengine.org, limiting StayNJ benefits to households earning NJ's median, $103,500 as of 2024 acc to FRED, would save us $917 mil & mostly impact the impoverished 9th decile of earners. app.policyengine.org/us/report-ou...

And as #NJ considers budget-busting initiatives like #StayNJ ostensibly “as a way to keep Jersey grandparents close to their Jersey grandkids,” our seniors are some of those most vulnerable to climate impacts.

Last year the state legislature ignored a limitation on the Stay NJ tax credit which requires a surplus of 12% in order to go into effect. We need to keep those guardrails in place.

Reminder that Stay NJ actually helps the wealthy disproportionately:

Yes—my understanding of that program is that they are “frozen” at the prior year’s rate. Paying 2025 taxes is certainly better than paying 2026 taxes, but the StayNJ benefit seems much more significant.
