i thought we had moved beyond this

situation surrounding the game aside, using steamchart player numbers to judge a game's success or something has never been a good metric, we went over this years ago
City of the Wolves' launch peak on Steam is lower than that of any fighting game released since DNF Duel. This is rather pathetic compared to this release's marketing budget. Gives me mixed emotions, but ultimately, fuck this. Let it burn.

Now that we’ve agreed SteamChart pocket watching is dumb b/c Marathon rocks, we can also agree not to push “X game has lost Y% of its players a month after launch” content, right?

There are bigger things to worry about, but that coverage actively hurts games and importantly the folks who make them.

as someone that loves arc raiders, i genuinely cannot wait to watch the game die. people online comparing every fucking video game to steamchart numbers of arc raiders is so unhealthy for the game industry. embark also might be the worst company at addressing issues in their game i've ever seen

I saw him worm the phrase "Arena Royale" back into his new statement on why his re-released game's steamchart numbers are still ass and I was screaming at the phone over it. how is he the last person to realize nobody wants this from the free Portal-Halo guys

people are people and people have opinions but I was getting war flashbacks to when dunkey was popular when tassi kept posting marathon steamchart numbers every week and made everyone hate a game they'd never even bothered to look into before

Yo-ho, steamchart-neighbours! Hope it is smooth sailing form here!

Seeing people do steamchart discourse with non FG games cracks me up sm. A popular game will have 30k concurrent players long after it's peak and the audience will shit on devs for not holding 500k when everyone's moved on to the new Twitch Flavor of The Month lol

I think most gamers who talk online about games almost exclusively talk about them as consumer products, and because thats genuinely the inverse of seeing it as art actual artistic critique is almost always forgotten in favor of things like steamchart posting and dumb shit.

a bit of an aside but if anything, looking at steamcharts for FGs only highlights how street fighter 6's massive mainstream success has mercilessly absorbed so many players from other games,,

but whipping out a steamchart to be like "number lower after launch, game is ded" is just so dumb anywhere

It fuckin' WILD that Rockstar are disrespecting PC users with this GTA6 "Console only" crap when these are the current numbers on steam for GTA5.

A 12 year old game.

This is more numbers than most AAA new releases.

One thing that bothers me about gaming discourse on the internet in the last ten years is what I want to call shareholder mentality. It's arguing over steamchart screens, it's telling critics they're scaring the players away, it's shutting down design talk with "yeah but it sells". I don't like it.

I looked at steamspy, steamchart, steam achievements and number of steam and metacritic reviews for bg3 and the wizard game and the wizard game is blatantly not the number one game of 2023 by a large margin. BG3 clearly is.

I think “SteamChart Culture” is a major drain on gaming, and players have absolutely no need for game population metrics beyond stupid repackaged console wars bullshit.

It’s mainly used for confirmation bias and grifting, with an inverse relationship between posting about it and playing the games.

Destiny 2 had more players sign in on PC yesterday than any day since The Final Shape (Steamchart which is not other platforms)
June 11, 2026 at 2:38 PM
The All-Time peak of Marathon (77,358) players on Steamcharts is currently less than Destiny 2’s current playercount (86,906).
I loath steamchart posts but that’s wild.

SteamChart is stupid. I saw people calling a single player game a massive failure because it had a significantly smaller playerbase... MONTHS after the game was released.

It's dumb.
April 5, 2026 at 3:17 PM
Amazing.
Look at the company this 13 year-old game is keeping.

So happy for Digital Extremes, my favourite developers in the world.

Decided to judge every game by steamchart player numbers. If it has less than the arbitrary game I pick it's bad. Doesn't work for console only games but those are mostly nintendo and I just assume it has performance problems.

A newcomer has shaken up the ranks in this week's SteamDB chart. Can you guess which one? 🤔

it genuinely kinda feels like higher ups in riot str8 up did not like the game, the marketing was non existent and the riot socials just posted about it less than any of their other stuff. ppl didnt even know it was 1.0!!
and yeah absolutely "dead game" steamchart analysis makes me so sad

every time ppl get the same discourse in trying to figure out why 90% of all fighting games hit 2-3 digit steamchart numbers in a month, we will continue to spin around the same ideas (single player, teams, ease, ect) and ignore games with them and still fail to hit the dream FG numbers.
