lol. Stelco’s owner is so fucked.
Mélanie Joly: "What was interesting in his interview is that [Cleveland-Cliffs CEO] mentioned that Stelco was a competitor that he wanted to get rid of... he's proving our case."

The American CEO who bought Stelco is openly admitting that he purchased the company to sabotage it.

This is why the Liberals should have never approved Stelco's sale in the first place. When you give away ownership of a critical industry like steel, your economy is forever under another's thumb.
Cleveland-Cliffs CEO: I bought Stelco because I could not afford anymore having Stelco flooding the market here in the United States to the detriment of my own company.

David Cochrane: Am I understanding you correctly there? It was a defensive acquisition?

Speaking to reporters ahead of caucus, Melanie Joly said the government believes Stelco's owner committed a ‘double violation of undertakings.’

He ALSO makes two contradictory claims about Stelco's market impact:

1. "Stelco is flooding the US market"
2. "Cleveland Cliffs alone exceeds entire steel production of Canada"

Well, which is it? If Stelco's production is <CC's (=18% of US market), then it cannot plausibly "flood" the US market.

🚨🇨🇦 Stelco's U.S. owner admitted to CBC he bought the Canadian steelmaker to stop it competing with his American business. Now hundreds face layoffs, Ottawa threatens legal action, and he may sell. Should Canada tighten protections against foreign takeovers?

🇨🇦🏭 Stelco's U.S. owner told CBC he bought the company to stop it undercutting American steel prices. Now Mélanie Joly says Ottawa's lawyers are examining his remarks amid a dispute over layoffs and employment commitments. Could the CEO's own words affect the legal showdown?

Steel is one of the quintessential National Security industries.

Stelco’s new owners are pretty clearly idling a significant portion of Canadian steel capacity in-service of foreign political objectives.

We cannot wait for litigation, this should be nationalized at the price paid immediately.

Clear statement by @melaniejolycan.bsky.social:

“Bring back the jobs and I want a timeline.”

As a mother of a young Canadian woman, having an unapologetically strong woman at the helm of Industry Canada is a delight - she’s worth a follow to inspire us all.

When you, a US CEO, go on the Canadian national broadcaster and admit before everyone that you bought up a strategically critical Canadian company specifically so that you could hobble it and keep it from impacting your US interests, that is what we in the business call a "whoopsie".
