This week I am attending and presenting at Star Formation Fields, a conference organised by @univie.ac.at at Rethymno in Crete! 🔭

A great opportunity to discuss the latest developments on star formation, the interstellar medium and young stellar populations!

Happy to announce that the line-detector.oca.eu website is now online!
It allows the user to select the stellar type, [M/H], λ- range, and resolving power and the page returns:
-purity of the line and minimum S/N required to detect it.
-interactive plot to identify the lines in the spectra

Interestingly, the star, which is marked by four long diffraction spikes, is located in our Milky Way just 7,109 ly from Earth.
This highlights how images of the cosmos can include objects at very different distances, creating a sort of perspective illusion.

Star formation primarily takes place within compact clusters in the local Milky Way! 🌌 #galactic #stellarastro

We've shown this combining the results from two recent, Gaia-based catalogues: the open clusters census from @emily.space and my census of OB stars within 1 kpc!
Most stars form in clusters! 🔭🧪☄️ #galactic

In a new paper led by @alexis-space.bsky.social, we show that >80% of stars in the local Milky Way formed in clusters.

This is *much* higher than other recent estimates (~15%), and supports more traditional 'clustered' models of star formation!
How many stars form in compact clusters in the local Milky Way?
Two main models coexist for the environment in which stars form. The clustered model stipulates that the bulk of star formation occurs within dense embedded clusters, but only a minority of them survi...

A new census of OB associations with Gaia!

In this study, we took advantage of my OB stars map to find new OB associations within 1 kpc. The goal was to create a useful reference catalogue for this era, and to trace the star formation and structure of the local Milky Way.
