Happiness is finding a stereoview from the 1870's of a house your ancestor built ca. 1642 on #ebay - and the dealer giving you a great price. John Poore (c. 1615-1684) of Newbury, Mass. My 4th great grandmother lived here until 1819 when she died.

"Geisha in a Rickshaw" (c. 1900), captured by an anonymous Japanese photographer.
Captured around 1900 during the late Meiji period, this evocative monochrome photograph depicts a geisha seated poised within a rickshaw (jinrikisha), accompanied by two pullers (sha-fu). Framed within an arched top border characteristic of turn-of-the-century album mounts and stereoview prints, the composition unfolds along a curved cobblestone path (ishidatami) bordered by traditional bamboo fencing and a thatched gate structure. Seated gracefully atop the high carriage, the woman holds an open oiled-paper umbrella (wagasa), her central position elevated above her attendants to establish a compelling visual and social dynamic. The woman’s attire exemplifies the refined formality of Meiji-era entertainment district dress. Her hair is sculpted into an elaborate nihongami coiffure adorned with delicate hairpins (kanzashi). She wears a dark formal kimono accented by bold, high-contrast motifs sweeping across the sleeves and lapels, paired with an intricately woven brocade obi and crisp inner collar layers (kasane-eri). In contrast, the two pullers are clad in utilitarian working attire consisting of dark cotton coats (hanten), fitted trousers (momohiki), and traditional woven straw sandals (waraji). The white calligraphic text printed along the collar of the front puller’s jacket denotes the registration number and license details of the rickshaw guild. Invented in Tokyo during the late 1860s, the jinrikisha rapidly became the definitive mode of urban transport across Japan, serving as the primary vehicle for geisha traveling between their residences (okiya) and teahouses (ochaya). Unlike many commercial photographs of the era produced for foreign tourists that relied on staged studio backdrops, this image offers an authentic outdoor perspective. The candid, direct gazes of all three subjects provide a compelling window into the social structure, material culture, and transportation networks of turn-of-the-century Japan.
