First description of a dinosaur published: ‘Megalosaurus or great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield’ by William Buckland.

William Buckland’s 1824 paper, “Notice on the Megalosaurus or great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield,” would also be an excellent title for a Regency-set weird fic about a dinosaur loose on the English countryside.

More Stonesfield pterosaur stuff to come 👀

A fine mosaic featuring Bacchus and leopard was unearthed from a #Roman villa at Stonesfield #Oxfordshire in 1712

It was recorded by William Lewington in this painting now in @antiquaries.bsky.social

Soon after, the floor was destroyed by locals "who refused to pay for seeing it" 😱

* “average resurfacing cycle for all types of roads in England is every 103 years” factoid actualy just statistical error. average resurfacing cycle is every 12 years. Stonesfield megalosaurus pothole, which was caused by a 700kg dinosaur 166mn yrs ago, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Pub 3361, White Horse, Stonesfield. Loved the angular low bare boarded beginnings, village was cute, locals said arrr, but the Harry Potter beer range declined quickly and it was more huff than puff late on.

Just published today - a quick nomenclatural note on an obscure non-pterodactyloid pterosaur from the Stonesfield Slate! Thomas Huxley named it in 1859, not Hermann von Meyer
Rhamphorhynchus bucklandi Huxley, 1859 is the valid name and authority for a Jurassic pterosaur (Pterosauria, RHAMPHORHYNCHIDAE) from England, not Pterodactylus bucklandi Meyer, 1832 |...

#FossilFriday: Amongst the 'Ichthyodontes Cuspidati' illustrated by Edward Lhuyd in his 1699 book on British fossils, Lithophylacii Britannici Ichnographia, no. 1328 stands out. It's a tooth of Megalosaurus from the type locality of Stonesfield in Oxfordshire.

A worn dinosaur tooth, possibly Megalosaurus bucklandii from the Stonesfield Slate Horizon, Taynton Limestone Formation in Oxfordshire, England. Megalosaurus is the first non-avian dinosaur to be described. #FossilFriday

As social media officer, it’s my sworn duty to pop over the shoulders of any collections staff who have a drawer open and say “what’s that? Can I take a picture?”

Here are a few fossil turtle scutes from the Stonesfield site in Oxfordshire. Anyone know of any other famous fossils from that site?

Megalosaurus is Sex Pistols. Foundational, rudimentary, messy, scariest thing imaginable to an earlier generation. I'm far from done but have to go to class! Stay tuned...

Unaware that the men are watching her, Silulu's genitals are spread open in front of the camera and her insides are exposed The grotesque details of her genitalia which do not match her dainty appearance, make the men's erections hard to resist

Hearne then criticised Webb's drawing, although it appears he hadn't actually seen it ... Hearne's diaries give a wonderful insight into early enthusiasm for this mosaic and for colourful rivalry between antiquarians. (Stonesfield is within easy reach of Oxford.) 2/4

Silulu's Mating
before after

Even the dainty and ladylike Shiru, when her genitals are expanded, reveal a grotesque and obscene female reproductive hole.
