College students may soon benefit from two new bipartisan federal laws. One makes the FAFSA available earlier; the other curbs campus hazing.

At least 44 states and the District of Columbia have anti-hazing laws in place, most recently Ohio in 2021 and Pennsylvania in 2018. Kentucky and Washington strengthened their laws this past legislative session. Six states — Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming — have none, according to StopHazing, an anti-hazing advocacy and research organization.

Hobart and William Smith’s new preventative measure to combat on-campus hazing involves a mandatory 20-minute survey to be completed by the end of October. The online program, “StandUp to Hazing” (StandUp) created by the anti-hazing organization StopHazing, is an ideal answer to any college wishing to shoehorn in cheap solutions instead of practicing what the survey offers … stopping hazing. The survey is more interested in teaching students how to be bystanders than in encouraging environments where healthy club activities are the norm. Before you’re tasked with wasting your time, HWS introduces the survey with some filler language, claiming that the course will teach how “[O]ur hazing policy protects the safety and well-being of everyone on our campus.” This is technically true.

The fraternity hazing revelations this week at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga were serious enough that officials have suspended all Greek Life activities until Sept. 5.
