The Alaska election stories that DO matter.
Democrats have filed a lawsuit in Alaska accusing election officials of failing to properly operate at least 18 rural polling locations. The complaint warns that several thousand voters across predominantly Alaska Native communities face disenfranchisement. trib.al/w62mYIa

also on that note I wanna say: learning that the witcher games were sequels to the book series and not direct adaptations was actually really cool. i love when an adaptation is essentially AU or speculative fanfiction. new stories new stories new stories new stories

National media is an elite White space that misses a lot of major stories that pertain to minority politics. Two stories that are massively under reported at the moment 1.) ICE will be Texas' Prop 187. The sleeping Latino Giant electorate has awakened 2.) Gutting the VRA upended Southern politics.
There are now at least 15 counties in TX where the total early/mail vote has exceeded the total turnout from 2022, including election day votes. These counties are clustered in south Texas/RGV, Dallas, Houston, and Austin metros.

2. They put huge weight on stories they feel that they have broken/are breaking, and extremely devalue stories they didn't report first. I was told "if we didn't break the story, I don't want it on the front page."

Wow, @patrickhealy.bsky.social!

Imagine NYT missing this story bc you're too busy chasing Water Wet stories in Alaska.

Must be humiliating!!
New: Nevada Republican David Flippo claimed he was serving in the Air Force in “the desert” in 1991.

A previously unreported college paper article shows he was actually at Montana State University doing ROTC during Operation Desert Storm.

David Flippo misrepresented his military record on Desert Storm
The Nevada congressional candidate said he was in "the desert" in 1991. Records show he was attending Montana State and was not on active duty during Operation Desert Storm.

Because of the media’s horse race fixation, we must keep chanting Jay Rosen’s phrase “not the odds, but the stakes.”
Think of it this way: Did they write stories about how the election outcome will affect gas prices, or did they write stories about how gas prices will affect the election outcome?

If youre wondering why so much old sci fi has telepathy and ESP, well, its because Campbell believed in it and wanted stories about it. He was also incredibly racist and demanded stories fit his racist nonsense
"The Golden Age of SF" was also editorially mono-polar, in that writers tried to sell to John W. Campbell and Astounding/Analog and then would submit elsewhere when he passed, so even other magazines could have Campbell's feel/tone to their stories. It was the "default" style of the entire era.
There's a lot of sentimental talk about 'Golden Age' SF, but honestly, most of it is crap. I've just been reading some of Bob Shaw's 1950's short fiction, & wow, it is terrible. Just clumsy af, & terrible writing, This is also true of Asimov & many other Golden Age writers.

Where are the personal interest stories about educated former Republicans turning on the monster they helped create?

Okay but now we need 9 more stories, a follow up about how the coverage is impacting the election and a panicked editorial about the 25th Amendment.

i really dislike this constant tendency amongst journalists to defend stories like this in the abstract. this story and the NYT’s coverage of it is like many other times the NYT has chosen to make mundane politics stories into almost exclusively dem scandals immediately before an election
People who think the Times shouldn’t report on who is behind a Potemkin candidate should really ask themselves if they’d feel that way if such a move might hurt a candidate they favored. This is not a “hit piece” or an “October surprise,” it is journalism.
