Stop making this all Leo Strauss’ fault
You could write a history of reactionary thought that starts with Leo Strauss teaching Allan Bloom how to do esoteric readings of Plato and ends with Elon Musk failing to grasp the plain text of a 2000s CGI-heavy film trilogy for children

This is a real "I want him to know it was me" moment from Saka to Strauss
Well, well, well. CM Saka is attending Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson's press conference on her veto of the RV permitting program legislation. CM Saka was one of the six original votes in favor of this legislation, but his presence suggests he might have reconsidered.

I still think she should veto to force another vote and public debate, but it's hard to imagine who would change their vote on this bill, sponsored by Dan Strauss. "Yes" votes were Saka, Hollingsworth, Rivera, Juarez, Strauss, and Kettle.

Also reached out to Team Strauss to find out more about this conversation, in which Strauss said Wilson called her at 4:00 today "to let me know she was breaking that promise."

New thread on Mayor Katie Wilson's veto of Dan Strauss' legislation to create a permitting system for people who live in their RVs (which would require RV owners to accept services and shelter) and eventually ban them citywide. Both Strauss and Wilson agreed she initially said she wouldn't veto.

Strauss had this absolutely killer line defining dogmatism as when someone confuses the goal of thinking with the point they became tired of thinking.

Pulling a little prank on Dan Strauss today

Strauss has said repeatedly that Mayor Wilson, in general, is "disingenuous."
November 3, 2026 at 8:42 PM
If true, this means the mayor (and her allies) secured a fourth vote against Dan Strauss' legislation, enough to prevent the council from overturning the veto.

Seattle City Councilmember Dan Strauss, the sponsor of RV ban legislation, held a press conference an hour later saying he had lost trust in Mayor Katie Wilson after she broke a promise to him that she would support the bill. Wilson says she always had serious concerns about it.

There's case law that defines RVs as residences (as opposed to towable vehicles) in some circumstances, and a lawsuit over Strauss' proposal seemed inevitable.

Who’s excited to get rid of Dan Strauss next year
Mayor Katie Wilson: focused on policy outcomes, good processes, not making decisions based on anything personal

Dan Strauss: focused on petty personal grievances, ignoring policy outcomes and sensible processes, just generally being a clown rather than a responsible elected official.
Councilmember Dan Strauss put out a statement tonight claiming the mayor "promised" she wouldn't veto his bill. He also decried her "lack of leadership" in choosing to veto his RV ban. The council will now schedule a vote on whether to overturn the veto; the bill passed 6-3.

BREAKING: Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has just vetoed Councilmember Dan Strauss’ RV permit legislation, citing legal and administrative concerns, as well as worries it would cause more people to become unsheltered. Advocates said the bill effectively banishes hundreds of homeless RV residents.
November 3, 2026 at 12:45 AM
Wilson said she never deceived Strauss and that "my staff have also been transparent with Councilmember Strauss about that shift" in her views. As I noted in an earlier thread, the council will now likely vote on whether to overturn the veto, which would require at least one to change their vote.

It seems like a decision that will age well. And, Strauss hasn't exactly offered a confident defense of the legislation.
This is the right move by @mayor.seattle.gov to veto a performative, unworkable piece of legislation that won’t actually get people out of RVs and into stable housing.

I’m sure some on the Council will scream, but Mayor Wilson is again proving she’s the sensible and reasonable one here.
Mayor Wilson did, in fact, veto the bill that would ban RVs over time, citing risks including the likelihood that the elaborate licensing system and one-time count of RV residents will increase administrative burdens and increase unsheltered homelessness. wilson.seattle.gov/wp-content/u...
