CHEERS TO THE DEATH OF STREETEASY
BREAKING: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a bill banning landlords from using algorithms to collude and raise rents.

These days I am spending less time on social media and more time on streeteasy

The only website on the internet that actually needs a comment section is StreetEasy because I should get to tell landlords how stupid their apartments are

Semi-relatedly, maybe fired up StreetEasy last night and then sobbed
This guy calculates that the real 'poverty line' for Americans is a household income of $136,500. I think it is plausible. There is an interesting discussion of housing in this article, which compares the national average to the cost of housing in Caldwell, NJ. www.yesigiveafig.com/p/part-1-my-...

Has anyone pointed out that right now on streeteasy there are like 20 1 bedroom apartments for rent in Astoria under $2500 ? $2300 for a 1 bedroom in queens is not an outrageous bargain!

The first study on the elimination of brokers fees finds what we always expected. An 8-15% fee was replaced by a less than 1% increase in rents. An unambiguous win for tenants! gothamist.com/news/nyc-end...

Another super-successful progressive reform passed in NYC to eliminate broker fees and - in a shocking turn of events - the right wing and corporate fear mongering against it turns out not to be true:

NYC ended most broker fees last month. What has the new law done to rents?
A new report from StreetEasy finds rents have largely remained stable.

For those just tuning in, Mamdani got his apartment by:

1. Going on StreetEasy
2. Finding an apartment he liked
3. Applying for it
4. Signing a lease

Half of NYC rental apartments are stabilized. This is the nonnest non-issue imaginable. This is all in absurdly bad faith.
Hakeem Jeffries says of Cuomo's attacks on Mamdani for living in a rent controlled apartment: "It's a legitimate issue that has been raised, and the [Mamdani] campaign is going to have to address it."

sometimes I put my apartment search criteria from 3 years ago into StreetEasy to see how impossible it would be to get this type of apartment now and seems pretty impossible

Streeteasy is a database of rents that are priced *above* the market equilibrium. It is substantially higher than "the rents people pay".

Listing sites like Zillow and StreetEasy are littered with photos of homes edited with A.I., showing fake fireplaces, improved views and virtual landscaping, raising false advertising concerns.

I admire every person who offers a video tour of their apartment or hotel room but I also know how easy it is to figure out the address of where someone lives or stays based on cross-referencing images from Streeteasy, Zillow, Google Maps and travel websites
