#Strekalov

On this day in space! Sept. 26, 1983: Russian cosmonauts narrowly escape Soyuz rocket explosion
On Sept. 26, 1983, a Russian Soyuz rocket exploded on the launchpad. Two cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov were inside their Soyuz T-10-1 spacecraft atop the rocket, and they barely made it out alive. Titov and Strekalov's mission was intended to launch the cosmonauts from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the Salyut 7 space station. But about 90 seconds before their rocket was supposed to launch, a fire erupted on the launchpad. Thankfully, the emergency abort escape system ejected their Soyuz space capsule from the top of the rocket just two seconds before the fire caused the explosion. it was the first time the launch escape system was used, but unfortunately it wouldn't be the last. Why it mattered The harrowing launch abort of the Soyuz T-10-1 spacecraft (also known as Soyuz T-10A) proved the effectiveness of a launch escape system that no one ever wanted to see actually used. It was the first crewed launch pad abort. Russia's Soyuz spacecraft, when stacked atop their Soyuz rockets, have a launch escape tower equipped with its own rocket motors that is designed to rip a Soyuz capsule free of its rocket so the spacecraft can parachute to safety in...

[November 27th, 1980] The Soyuz T-3 launched with cosmonauts Kizim, Makarov, and Strekalov to dock with Salyut 6. It was the first Soviet trio in space since the 1971 disaster. The crew tested a modernized computer system designed to act as a "fourth member."

#OTD in 1983, a fire broke out in Baikonur before a liftoff of the Soyuz 7K-ST No. 16L spacecraft (later known as Soyuz T-10A) with cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennadi Strekalov. The emergency escape system pulled away the spacecraft six seconds before the launch vehicle exploded, saving the crew.

My major inspiration here is @lead-castle.bsky.social's incredible comic project Wyvern! Reading the comic and seeing all of the process behind it is the thing that finally got me to pick up a pencil and start pursuing this goal of mine. Best $3/month i've ever spent.

Six seconds before their booster exploded, Soyuz's launch escape system pulled Vladimir Titov and Gennadi Strekalov away from the pad. The capsule hit fourteen to seventeen g and landed about 4 km away. Both men survived with bruises.

On April 2, 1984, Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space. Asked how India looked from orbit, he replied, “Saare Jahan Se Achha.” His words sparked pride across a nation and ignited dreams of reaching the stars.
