#Sturtevant’s
Tbqh everything I know about sturtevant’s balls I learned on the internet
And for a deeper dive: Sturtevant, "Johns Painting with Two Balls," 1987. If you asked me to say more about the construction of the Sturtevant work I'd reply: "I don't know- ask @greg.org" greg.org/archive/2023...

Favorite hybridizers: Grace Sturtevant, America's First Lady of #Irises. 'Pink Jadu', one of Miss Sturtevant's later varieties from 1931. A lovely plicata of white dotted lavender rose. 🌱 The light ruffling is quite pleasing.

On this topic, see Amy S. Kaufman (@askaufman.bsky.social) and Paul B. Sturtevant's book The Devil's Historians: How Modern Extermists Abuse the Medieval Past (2020).

BTW, I've had no luck finding a French publisher to translate it yet, but if anyone is interested, I'm ready to translate it!
So 2 thoughts on this, 1 complementary and 1 a bit more critical #medievalsky
Far-right groups are co-opting the aesthetics of the Crusades for their own objectives, transforming an obsession with feudal justice into a campaign for a White Christian nation.

Far-right VA State Sen. Glen Sturtevant (R) threatens that "we will literally not show up to vote in the midterms." In other words, he's threatening us with a good time! LOL (Sturtevant's district, btw, appears to have gone for Spanberger on 11/4) bluevirginia.us/2025/11/satu...

Christian reminded me of Sturtevant's great story about Warhol asking her to make one of his piss paintings, it comes at the end of one of the most intense artist talk q&a sessions I've ever seen. Walker audiences are not here to play youtu.be/5m5XSHgKARI?...

Sturtevant's tweeting all about it; still boggles my mind how fast he went from school board budget hawk to goose-stepping freak

“It’s deeply problematic we’ve come to a place where we accept we should be in fear of a president who says … anything from outright lies to twistings of the truth,” Gov. Spanberger says of Sen. Sturtevant’s concern an aggressive SOTU response may hurt Virginia’s relationship with federal gov’t.

I think I've been rather smartly trolled. I gave my methodology class a final paper assignment on the topic of appropriation in art, with the caveat that Warhol and Duchamp were off-limits (too obvious/repetitive). So one of my students wrote, quite well, about Elaine Sturtevant's "Warhol Flowers" 😆

a) Sturtevant's a right-wing extremist
b) Absolutely nothing Spanberger has done so far has been even remotely "reckless"
c) Sturtevant has no clue what "reactionary" means; it actually refers to arch conservatives like him bluevirginia.us/2026/01/vide...

Sturtevant's a right-wing extremist and nutjob, so...not surprising.

Sturtevant's "A History of Genetics" (1965) touches on this briefly but gives the "official version".

The Whitney Museum acquired Sturtevant's repetition of Felix Gonzalez-Torres' "Untitled" (Blue Placebo), which is a wild work to exist, and to have in a museum collection. Been trying to figure out what I think about it. greg.org/archive/2023...

Marcel Duchamp hung Surrealist works on revolving doors in 1938, and Sturtevant hung Duchamps on Duchamp Revolving Door in 1973. But also, MoMA had full-on photo replicas of the Duchamp works that couldn't travel to their 1973 retrospective. Thanks, curator-scholars! greg.org/archive/2023...

Sturtevant's a case study in the radicalization of formerly sane, "moderate" Rs into extremist MAGA nutjobs - in Sturtevant's case, presumably b/c he calculated (correctly) that this could be a path to success in the MAGA GOP for him. Sadly, we've seen this character arc with many others as well...

Love that post on Doriani, whom I hadn't known about before. Also, your post reminded me of Janis's garmento (in your words) roots, which suddenly made me wonder if that might be one point of reference in the clothes rack of Sturtevant's Bianchini Gallery installation

On the academia->industry side a real champion has been Dr. Nathan Sturtevant. On the left a figure from Sturtevant's "A sparse grid representation for dynamic three-dimensional worlds" (2011!) Dragon Age work and the right "Pathfinding and Abstraction with Dynamic Terrain Costs" for Nightingale.

Miss Sturtevant's varieties, coming out of her New England garden, did not always perform well in warmer climates. They need that deep winter cold to really thrive.

Y'all, the catalogue from Sturtevant's 1973 exhibition at the Everson Museum in Syracuse is rare enough without people chopping it up and forging her signature on individual pages to sell online as "original" prints. greg.org/archive/2024...
