(Can't say I landed every shot though :D)

Spotters do have Sako M23 7.62x51 semi-auto rifles.

Engagement distances can vary wildly in Finnish terrain. There are almost treeless vistas in the north, and practically subarctic jungles in the east. In exercises, I rarely measured over 250 meters.

BTW a map showing the age of Finnish forests (NOT GREAT) and a site with more details about which Finnish national parks (GREAT!) one should visit - and when - to see old growth subarctic forests.

Sadly, really old growth forest of, say, 250 years or more is uncommon even in national parks.
I really liked Oulanka's Karhunkierros trip!

The site below says the top three Finnish national parks for old forest enjoyers are

1. Syöte
2. Hiidenportti
3. Urho Kekkonen's park (tho largely low growth)

It has great maps! Blues are >111 years old in 2026.

Finnish forest industry produces low value added bulk from biomass of endangered subarctic ecosystems that repair themselves very slowly.

And its dominant, near monopoly position hinders the development of alternative uses for what could be - for example - the best furniture wood on Earth.

Another big consumer of the remaining real Finnish forests is cardboard for packaging Temu crap.

There are also multiple cases of even 300 year old trees being cut only to be burned by municipal energy companies.

And Finnish subarctic ecosystems repair themselves *veeeeery* slowly.

Truth-plant is a common tree, mostly prized for its medicinal value. It is native to subarctic meadows. Interestingly, it is always warm to the touch.
Its pollen, when burned as incense, will create a circle of protection.
Unfortunately, using it requires an obscure, elaborate ritual.

Depends on the biome.

A lush and tranquil forest? She's camping out at the edge of town.

A sweltering desert or frigid subarctic? She's booking a room at the inn at the nearest city.
What does your original character prefer:

Rural areas, or cities?

Is there any reason to why?

The truth of vintage camping/campaigning kit, as tested in subarctic forests by yours truly:

- Foot wraps v socks: passable w/ jackboots, else socks
- sleeping bags v blanket/greatcoat: VERY MUCH former
- wool serge clothing: still very good!
- rubber boots w/removable felt liners: the bestest
I mean some people in Finland probably still think foot wraps are better for soldiers than socks. Or that sleeping bags are an unnecessary luxury.

The Arctic, subArctic, Antarctic and subAntarctic regions have been slammed by climate change for decades. Until it hit more white people in their pocketbooks, all y’all kept on keepin’ on.

Now, look what it’s wrought.

One container off the Ever Laurel held 28,800 plastic bath toys with a known release date and position — an unfunded drift experiment. The first hundreds beached near Sitka within months. The rest went around the subarctic gyre, and a few reached the Atlantic.
