There's kind of wacko side stuff like using hawking radiation from mini-black holes fed by scooping the stellar medium for random particles and subluminal warp drives that technically don't violate any laws but present engineering challenges we don't even know how to start solving.

On further investigation, I think the actual cause of today's several warp drive hypesters is that Popular Mechanics dug up a paper from several years ago and failed to read even the abstract thoroughly enough to notice the word 'subluminal'
