Here is an ancient oak in Big Sur dating from a time when the Esselen People were the sole human occupants of this land. It got infected with Sudden Oak Death disease several years ago. Here is my attempt to address this pathogen using a "fire mimicry" protocol. #suddenoakdeath #firemimicry #TEK 🌎🌐🌲

California oak decline is reversible!
For more than two decades the decline and death of California’s oaks has been a matter of serious concern. In 2000 the California Oak Mortality Task Force (COMTF) was formed and members of th…

Another successful canker surgery on an ancient coast live oak
This is a 2017 image of an old-growth coast live oak in Monterey that I’ve been treating with fire mimicry for eight years. At that time it had bleeding stem canker infection, possibly Sudden…

A new tool for the conservation and preservation of a major carbon sink - our old-growth oak forests. Surgery! Many oaks are diseased with stem canker infections that can be successfully removed, cauterized, and poulticed. #suddenoakdeath #firemimicry #conservation 🌎🌐🌲
Demonstration of a canker surgery on a coast live oak
Happy Halloween! Today’s canker surgery on a ghost (coast) live oak gave off a real Halloween vibe. The surgery was gruesome, deep pockets of dark, discolored diseased tissue spreading inside…

Oak restoration project in Boulder Creek, CA – 2024 Update
Six years ago I began a forest restoration project in Boulder Creek, CA using fire mimicry treatments to help improve the health of a grove of coast live oaks, some of which are likely more than 25…

Surgical intervention can successfully remove stem canker infections (e.g. #suddenoakdeath) from oak trees! I removed a bleeding stem canker with cutting tools, cauterized the wound, and applied a limewash poultice. 6 yrs later the wound has largely healed with no trace of infection! #oaks 🌎🌐🌲

🌲 Stopping #Forest disease before it spreads
Dr. Richard Hamelin explains how early action helped prevent #SuddenOakDeath in BC. Using genomic tools, CFIA identified the pathogen quickly, enabling faster testing and response to protect forest health.

Just reading in the in-depth/informative #BBCGardenersWorld magazine (thanks for the hand-me-down Jennifer! 😁) that they are using dogs to identify the fungus that causes #SuddenOakDeath! Incredible!

#Umbellulariacalifornica is a host of #Phytophthora #ramorum, the #pathogen that causes the disease #suddenoakdeath. It is important in this sense because it is one of two tree species (#tanoak is the other) on which the pathogen readily produces #spores.

Big Sur is home to many remarkable trees, including ancient groves of oddly shaped oaks and peculiar groupings and strange fire scars in old-growth redwoods, all dating from a time when the Esselen People were the sole human occupants of the land. #bigtrees #firemimicry #suddenoakdeath
