#SumLov Tropes

Disaster lesbian
Slow burn
Karmic entanglement (Fated lovers, but where fate is a real universal force.)
Border line yandere (toxicity obsessed character)
I confess, I don't have a great grasp of the specific terms for romantic tropes (I know it when I see it lol) but, for better or worse, they are a good marketing tool. What about you? Do you love when There's Only One Bed?

Not sure? Describe it!
Maybe we can help you out

#SumLov Dating

I would date them. I created them as people I understood and liked. I can't imagine writing a major character I didn't like. They each share a subset of my interests, are intelligent, and .share my sense of morality.

The antags no.
If they were datable, and available, would YOU date them?

What qualities in them make that more or less likely to happen?

#SumLov The first I rememberby name that hooked me was "Twin Spirits on a Roof," a #yuri VN. That was followed by "Girlfriends," "Sasameki Koto," and "A Kiss and White Lilly for my Girlfriend" All now Yuri classics.
Do you remember the first romance novel you read? Where did you get it from?

#SumLov Hello, I'm JD, straddling the line between spec and romance writing. I love to weave romantic relationships and plots close together. Currently I work on finishing my trilogy, finishing up a sequel novella, and research a new project: sword&sorcery...and some other projects...🫠

Genre/ subgenre is up for debate in all my works since they're straddling lines. But why fantasy? Bc that's what I do. It's where my brain lives. These stories started as smut I wrote for fun purely for myself when I got blocked on other projects. Then friends talked me into publishing
The romance umbrella is beautiful and broad, as evidenced by all of you!
🧡🧡🧡

Why is it fun or interesting—or challenging, even—to tell a romance in your subgenre? Tomorrow I'll ask you about subgenres you didn't pick. Today I wanna hear about the one you did! #SumLuv

Amos and Nara are very friendly, but neutral. They're figuring each other out for a while before they start to click.

Amos and Hena/Devross are instantly all over each other. A little much for three guys who just met.

Amos wants to help Seth. Seth Does Not Like Amos.

Meet cutes don't have to be "cute"! They are a plot device 🧡

But! Let's talk about how they DO feel about each other early on! Is it fairytale love? Is it *lust* at first sight? Hate at first sight? All??

Snips here are welcome (always welcome if you want to answer anything with a snip) 🧡

Lust at first sight, certainly. As for ppl catching feelings hard and fast, it's funny, I've got 2 stories where that's the case - The Exile and His Fool + Fear the Wood, Thin the Trees - and in both of them, said person is a total asshole about it and has humbling lessons to learn 😅

I'm writing a serialized demon polycule mystery/romance called Devoted (check my pinned)! I've been working on it for nearly a year now.

Never thought I'd write a romance, because for a while I was tired of romance in books. Turns out I was gay 🤷‍♂️and needed to be reading gay stuff

#SumLov I write Mythpunk. My universes are filled with shadowy forces and beings. I merge this the subgenra of Yuri. Romances that persist dispite dark tangled fates.
Sometimes it's a character unto itself in a romance!

We have subgenre prompts coming up where we can chat more broadly about types of settings, so for now I would love to hear about your *specific* setting and why it's fun/interesting to write a romance in 🧡

#SumLov Only one book didn’t play out the way I intended it to.

My Girlfriend Almost Got Me Killed had a thematic error and the climax scene and ending needed to be revised. Room had to be made for the continuing presence of the antag in the main relationship. Details would be a spoiler.
Did you always expect their story to play out the way it has? Is there anything about the story you had to change to accommodate this romantic relationship? #SumLuv

#KonbiniIdol Standard tropes for enemies to lovers and disaster lesbians

Vol. 1: Shishi getting over thinking Ume is trying to get between her & her girlfriend. (Actually a ghost trying to kill her)
Vol. 2: Shishi & Ume realizing the other isn't just being nice out of duty & obligation
Even the coziest of romances has some tension, some aspect between them that must be unlocked over the course of the story to bring them closer

Is there some insecurity or some misunderstanding that must be overcome? Perhaps there is a very literal plot machination keeping them separate #SumLuv 🧡

Cindy and Keith. Popular girl, outcast boy in the first book (high school); accidentally re-meeting after they've experienced decades of life in the second. They're surface opposites but personality compatible. I like characters in general being different than how people perceive them #SumLov
August 2, 2026 at 3:02 PM
Aaaand Light Wielding, which I am so fond of but which agents apparently hate. Sunday is the protagonist and her love interest is ... not super easy to describe. Sunday is a modern girl who takes a cosplay sword into a fairy tale land and gets roped into helping the king kill a demigod. #SumLov
Who are you writing about? What makes a romantic story about them interesting?

Hmm... From Fantasy Holiday Mobster Romance? 🤔

I think Cold War espionage would be a decent setting! Xenon is a spy for the USSR in NYC and Krainos is there twice a year for Press (fashion) Week? Maybe not as a designer… let him slay on the runway!
Kind of a silly one today. Could you change subgenres for this story? Have you??

Would it drastically change the story? What would be the funniest romantic subgenre to swap your characters into? 🧡🧡

The rom. I write Yuri. The relationship between women. It leaves room for innocence, pararomance, and full romance. There is an emphasis on cute, and relationship over the physical. Despite rumors to the contrary it is not limited to high school rom. I write josei (for adult women) rom.
The romance umbrella is beautiful and broad, as evidenced by all of you!

I don't mind reading it as long as it is not to contrived.

I have never written it a breakup. I also write serials so the third act model is irrelevant to me.
How do you feel about the third act breakup? Do you use it in your own work?

#SumLov I write Yuri and Yuri adjacent joshi (adult audience). Why because it's where I got my first true taste of lesbian romance. As ace I like that the emphasis is on relationship not sexuality.
#SumLuv Why do you write romance? What is important to you this genre, why specifically tell these types of stories?

Someone asked me recently "why your genre" and it made me think long and hard about it. I answered in terms of dark fantasy and horror, but I'm curious what you all think about this?

I’ve posted a ton of cheeky banter between Alyx and Callon but honestly, I think this scene shows a lot ❤️ 💙

Alyx is an acts of service type of guy, and when he finds Callon’s apartment in disarray after a death in the family, he helps the best way he knows how.

#SumLov I write Queer Urban Fantasy set in modern Japan. Acceptance is not a reality in that setting, so it is not in my books. It touches my characters but is not something I focus on nor is it an important theme. Characters move in sub-cultures where it is true.
#SumLuv

I have talked about this with a few authors, but thought it would be interesting on here too.

I like stories where the characters fall for whoever they want, and things are easy, nobody cares who anyone else loves or has sex with, but is that something other authors want to show?

Amos instantly takes a liking to Seth, and he is definitely the one that falls first since Seth kind of hates him at first. Nara and Amos...let's just say it's a slow burn, but Nara fell first 🤐

My bumpkin left home bc he and his bestest friend since childhood tried to turn their friendship into romance when they aged into it; contemplate that heartbreak double-whammy. His name is Sunny Disposition. His LI, Tarasu, is a spy and lies about everything, esp not caring about anything

So much pining 😭but no, they don't fall at nearly the same rate. Devross instantly falls in love with most of the guys+Nara), and Amos fits his pattern. Amos originally has reservations feeding Hena's ego, and Hena's still working through emotional stuff from their previous owner.

#SumLov as for the genre as a whole. Yes it needs that. To this day I hold a grudge against a story that did a fade to black on the culmination scene leaving it as blatant subtext. My guess they were afraid of showing two women kissing. I felt so cheated. Moral of the story HEA is the min.
