Back to this guy #SundayFishSketch
I'm making all the deep sea fish to scale at the moment to get a feeling for how big they acually are.
This is a bigger one 😅 (1.15m)

#SundayFishSketch BONUS: Another full page! Although this skips the few we all did during #SciArtSeptember, and my one sick day this year.

Was slurping noods at lunch when I heard TV news mention parrotfish. Apparently confusion over whether they're being overfished off Penghu 澎湖. Probably? They do appear in seafood stalls in Taiwan, often generically labeled as 青衣、紅衣、鸚哥 etc. So here' a generic Scarinae for #SundayFishSketch 🐡🦑🧪

An exciting graduate opportunity, but also…what in the fish??? 🧐🧐🧐

@lampichthys.bsky.social if you are looking for an upcoming #sundayfishsketch theme, imagining what this fish looks like from a lateral view could be fun 👀
Looking for a PhD student to help uncover whether our arms and legs, and those of insects, share the same core gene-regulatory network. If interested, please contact antonia.monteiro@nus.edu.sg. Graduate Program application deadline is 15 Nov 2026 (www.dbs.nus.edu.sg/education/gr...)

Day 4 - #Cactus

A Porcupine Fish (Diodon hystrix) doing its best barrel cactus impression.
Looks like something socked them in the eye, causing the puff-up?

A blue wing olive mayfly and matching fly fishing lure for #SciArtSeptember / #SundayFishSketch 27 “quill.” Fly fishing lures aim to imitate small invertebrate prey of fish by combining natural and artificial materials, with quills making great segmented bodies for aquatic insect models.

Also coincidentally finished this just in time for Sunday Fish Sketch

For the last #SciArtSeptember #SundayFishSketch, Day 27 Quill I did a lionfish which was an ambitious choice when I’m getting over a bug I picked up at the conference 😅

27. Quill. Porcupine fish.

I'm knackered and had to dig deep for that one.

Day 26 - #quill

A Quillback (Carpoides cyprinus). A medium-sized sucker that inhabits local rivers with gravel/sandy bottoms.

If anyone has a good tutorial on doing scales…I generally avoid them like the plague, as you can see why here.

A quillback rockfish. Not quite a drawing with a quill but with a dip pen, which feels of-a-sort.

I added another little painting to my Ko-fi - a smol and very red Chaunacops.
The reference was Nautilus footage. 🐡
