Quick teardown of CPI from today. My "supercore" series was the slowest since early 2021, rents decelerated, core CPI ex rent barely rose, and "supercore" services was very weak as well.

Optically the CPI data suggests tariff front-running drove prices up in April with reversal in May.

Supercore services deflation! This is a big deal. Forget the November data alone, clear trend of disinflation here.

CAPITAL ECONOMICS: ".. The bigger concern is that the ISM services prices paid index edged up to 69.4, which means it continues to point to an acceleration in PCE supercore inflation to around 4%, from just over 3% now."

Whey, Creatine, and Zyns should be part of the supercore CPI

"paul, we love your weekly column about how the fed has reduced annualized quarterly trimmed supercore median pce to 2% and should start cutting rates, but have you consdiered doing some pieces about how every trans person is a satanic pedophile? that's more our beat these days"

Indeed, both core and "supercore" (core services excluding housing) are up sharply on a three-month annualized basis. Inflation clearly an issue even before the war with Iran sent energy prices through the roof.

left wing vibecession discourse: alas, the voters can never be wrong, we shall discuss mean trimmed supercore seasonally adjusted producer prices to show they are right

right wing vibecession discourse: if you want to buy food you're fat and gay
for reasons that only make sense if you're insane, a TPUSA kid complaining about burrito costs on xitter has the GOP's biggest divas going for each other's throats.

There were good details, particularly non-housing core services aka supercore. That's been sticky inflation in recent years and picked up earlier this year. June saw a decline, owing to some outliers. Supercore rose 0.2% in July, which is well below the pace early in the year.

CAPITAL ECON: ".. ISM services prices paid index jumped back up to 66.6, up 1.5-points from 65.1 in December. While still below its three-year-high of 70.0 last October, the figure does imply that PCE core services ex-housing (aka 'supercore') inflation may remain above target for some time .."

On the other hand, "supercore" inflation -- services prices excluding housing and energy -- has jumped on a year-over-year basis. That's not primarily about the war -- the hot monthly supercore reading came in January.

Trump failure ex. 9999: supercore” inflation — prices of services excluding energy and housing — which some policymakers see as a measure of underlying price pressures in the economy. That number came in very hot today, up 0.5 percent on a monthly basis and up 3 percent from a year ago.

No, because France is supercore to the European project. Have we learned nothing from the history of Euro crises? Europe has to be viewed primarily through a political lens, not an economic one.
