#Superblocks
Barcelona is famous for its Superblocks, but have you heard of its Open Streets? Obrim Carrers is perhaps the largest European example of this sort of program, much more popular in the Americas than in Europe.

Sílvia talked about the city's Superblocks and the transformation of Glòries Square, as well as other interventions that started as "temporary" initiatives but led to permanent impact. In this clip, she talks about Glòries and how crucial it was to get different political actors on board.

So here I am in Barcelona. I've now got 'Slow Train' by Flanders and Swann stuck in my head. I've strolled through the new superblocks of the Eixample and flopped in my aparthotel. Sustainable travel might be tiring on the legs, but it's definitely enriching for the soul. Over and out!

I picked 1-5 since it has a limited number of crossings so makes a clearer line. Especially if you need signage, cameras and infrastructure for every road.

Capitol & First Hills seem like they would be better handled with superblocks or LTNs to me, but I am not an expert

Portland already has some superblocks, and they're lovely! Pettygrove Park is at the heart of the one between SW Harrison, Clay, 1st, and 4th. I'd love to see the city create more by closing local streets to cars+adding green space.

Let's talk about schools and safer streets. 🏫

@xavimatilla.bsky.social, Barcelona's former chief architect, joined me on Urbanists on Bakfiets Talking Cities. We talked superblocks and urban transformation, but one story stood out.

In front of a school, you can propose changes that would be much harder to explain anywhere else.

So if we focus on schools and children's safety, could we improve the entire city?

The risk is also then that School Streets become 'easier to deliver, more palatable' than LTNs or Superblocks etc. for politicians. But of course, they're far less area-wide, intensive interventions - less traffic reduction, mode shift, childhood independence etc. than scarier, bigger schemes.

Read the thread! They have broad bike lanes, some streets are for bikes only (a bit like superblocks). The first thing you realize: The aggression I know from other European cities isn‘t there. Because bikes, cars and pedestrians are separated and don’t fight for space & survival.

going from suburban hell to superblocks
September 25, 2026 at 3:03 AM
Bikes are not banned on Sheridan. That is not true. But we should make superblocks out of the Kenmore & Winthrop stretch using traffic diverters yeah
September 21, 2026 at 3:00 PM
I live off Winthrop and there are just way too many cars all the time, honking and parking in the bike lane (usually DoorDash or Amazon 🖕) this shit needs to stop I just wanna live in peace. We need superblocks and traffic diverters so quiet neighborhood streets can stay that way

The idea for 5C is mostly that it will add another level of 16x16 pixel superblocks with the subblocks encoded in Hilbert order; and with a mechanism to repeat recently seen blocks and endpoints. This is intended to increase locality hopefully without too much impact on decode computational cost.
