Snap a glow stick: that flash is chemistry, not heat. Stressed plants glow the same way, just faintly. Pospíšil 2014 traces it to superoxide → ¹O₂, brightening 634/703 nm. But which ROS step actually dominates in vivo is still unproven. What's your stress protocol? #ROS #BAL #Science

Instead, it turns into a "free radical factory," churning out superoxide and making the cellular damage even worse.

🧪 Interested in how long superoxide survives in water?

M. Galián, L. García, M. Oliver, E. Javier Carrasco, F. A. Casado & M. Miró (FI-TRACE, UIB & CLECEM, University of Valencia) developed an automated flow-chemiluminescence system for reliable superoxide measurements.

I apologize for not being able to reorder these images in a timeline but hopefully it still makes sense.
This is a conversation about an article that used AI to rephrase plagiarized text and how it changed “final solution”
And how this is so common there’s a term for it now: “Tortured phrases”

SOD1 co-pathologies in the brain: insights from neuropathological evidence and implications.
de Azevedo, Evellyn Mayla; Bernardo, Victoria Simões; Lima, Marcelo M S; et al. Acta neuropathologica Vol. 152, no. 1, p. 43 Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), originally regarded as an antioxidant enzyme, is now recognized as a multifunctional protein whose conformational instability and aggregation contribute to neurodegeneration. The emerging evidence suggests that SOD1 pathology extends beyond amyotrophic lateral sclerosi

ROS is the perennial bad actor in living systems (aerobic life).

We have to remember that these are models not in living systems where life is founded on managing oxygen. There a multiple redundant systems in place to quench ROS if they are generated. Superoxide dismutase, peroxidases, even

Acclimation of Photosynthesis to the Environment 1 acts as a copper-binding superoxide detoxification enzyme - Nature Communications
APE1 co-evolved with Photosystem II as an ancestral enzyme that contributed to the Great Oxidation Event. This thylakoid-bound copper protein detoxifies O2•⁻, playing an essential role in photosynthetic acclimation to high light in oxic environments.

1/3 Your cells don't just make 'reactive oxygen species.' They choose between them — superoxide or hydrogen peroxide. A weak oscillating magnetic field can shift that choice, via quantum spin. No heating required. #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

2/3 Usselman et al. (2016) measured it in live cells: oscillating magnetic fields at Zeeman resonance shifted the superoxide/H2O2 ratio, consistent with coherent singlet–triplet mixing in spin-correlated radical pairs formed when flavoenzymes activate O2. https://doi.org/10.1038/srep38543

Look what's happened to my #orchid in contact with an Opuntia cactus. Its tiny hairs (glochids) that also cling to human skin & irritate it, have wounded the leaf, causing a defence response. The wound triggered a burst of rapid reactive oxygen species(superoxide & H₂O₂) from the epidermal cells.
